I have considered places like Sewanee and Rhodes but the more I look into the the more I see they are associated as party schools. I'm a student who doesn't want to get involved with that scene, so are there any LACs where I could either ignore it all or not have to deal with it at all? I'm looking at the South too, places in states like Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, so please don't post the New England LACs. As much as I would love to go there, its just too far from home.

While there is drinking at ALL colleges, North-South-East-West, there are PLENTY of kids who DONT drink and DONT party and who are serious academic students. You pick your friends.

Some schools are more sorority oriented than others however and it would be wise to check into that scene and whether that sorority drinks or not.

If so then dont pledge.

Whether its Sewannee, W & L, Davidson, Furman, Duke, Wake, Emory, Vanderbilt, Wofford, etc. there will always be irresponsible kids and kids who are not focused on their studies but instead on the social scene. But they can be avoided. In the meantime you can work on getting that 4.0 and blowing right by them. I have seen it a thousand times.

message the poster curmudgeon, whose daughter is at Rhodes

Look at Davidson and William & Mary. Two Southern schools where the culture is not as focused around drinking. Washington & Lee might be a little more "evolved" now that women are on campus, but you would need to check that out in person. Good Luck.

Overall, there tends to be less binge drinking in the south than in the northeast and midwest. You really have to look on a school by school basis.

W&L has one of the highest binge drinking rates in the country -- 60%+ in surveys year after year.

Vanderbilt, which people think of as a drinking school, has a binge drinking rate right at the national average -- 44%.

William & Mary is below the national average -- 38%, I think.

Try Wake Forest (Work Forest/White Forest)
