If my ethnicity is different from my nationality...

I was born in India but ethnically I am Nepali; I speak Nepali as opposed to Hindi and I visit Nepal while I never visit India at all. I haven't ever lived in India and my parents aren't Indian, but my passport is Indian.
So, in the common app, can I list myself as a Nepali? Will my Indian nationality be problematic if I identify myself as a Nepali? Additionally I am a resident of an East Asian city so I don't live in Nepal; will that be a problem too?

I am not sure whether my passport affects the race issue, so I'd appreciate if someone could clarify this issue for me. Thanks.

It is not that unusual for people to have nationality or live in a country where their ethnic group is a minority ethnic group.

Of course, if you are an international student for US university purposes, financial aid and scholarship availability will be very limited at US universities.
