That’s a very sad read considering that my good, gay, black friend will be attending W&L next year. I hope he can survive it socially. Personally, I was expecting to apply to W&L (they sent me a ton of literature and emails) but couldn’t fathom being surrounded by frat/drinking culture.

(This is directed at conformist, Greek-dominated, 1950’s-throwback environments in general. I don’t personally know anything about W&L.)

Your friend should avoid conformist, Greek-dominated, 1950’s-throwback environments at all costs. Even if the academics are top-notch. Even if the price is right.

One can’t force oneself to fit into a conformist, Greek-dominated, 1950’s-throwback environment if one isn’t a type of person who is accepted in that environment. Attempting to make oneself fit in is likely to be a disaster. Being ostracised and shunned is a likely outcome. There’s even a real risk of being harassed and bullied until one decides to keep to themself or just drops out entirely.

Thanks for the input, I’m still undecided, but I think I’m starting to lean one way.

As far as wearing khakis and blazers, I don’t, but I know how conservative the school is and I tend to lean to the right. I don’t really worry about fitting it too much.
