If the first plan does not work....

Hey,
I have an interest in the pre-med track (though I'm not sure what I want to major in)
but something has been bothering me.
What if I lose interest or if it's not for me?
Many of you may say well find something else you like!
Honestly, I can only see myself as a doctor. Nothing else.
I don't even have a backup plan.
How can I find a backup major/career that I could possibly have an interest in but also has good pay and in demand?

Well, it’s good to have a back-up plan…

What subjects do you like? Where are your strengths?

My son’s back-up as a premed was chemical engineering. It’s not for everyone, but if you like that sort of thing it can be a good back up.

What do you like?

I have an interest in Egyptian mythology/history, WW2 history, Chemistry, and strangely Statistics even though I have never taken a class.
My strengths lie in English, Math(kind of), and possibly Science.

Many people think they want to be doctors because they don’t know about very many options. Have you read What Color Is Your Parachute? Does your school or public library have a careers class? Have you ever gone to a career fair and listened to speakers who do things you’ve never heard of?

@‌ Wordworker
No. I haven’t done any of these things.

The easy solution is to try it and see. Think you’ve got an interest in stats? Go take Intro to Statistics, see if you still like it after that. If you can, pick classes that will help with your GE requirements too, then if you don’t like it it’s still useful. But try it out, just because you find a topic interesting doesn’t mean you’ll want to do it the rest of your life. At most schools it’s still possible to change majors until junior year-ish, maybe even later if the majors are similar.

As for career options, search around, maybe your school/career center will have information on what you can do with different degrees. Or look online, see what the outlooks for various majors are.
