I think of Outlander as kind of a “Game of Thrones”, but for the ladies. I watch GOT with my DH and he watches Outlander with me. It works for us.
I really enjoyed this latest episode and thought it was very well done. And it’s a good thing, too, because I had to watch it streaming on my cell phone because all our internet, cable and phone were down. I was home alone (DH had to work all weekend) and I was so looking forward to watching Outlander…but ended up maxing out the data limit on my phone. It was worth it.
I was also surprised that they didn’t let Jamie see Claire begin to disappear. However, in one interview or another, Ron Moore said he really didn’t want to get all sci-fi with the stones when she went through the first time, so he may be sticking with that. But maybe the wind could have come up really big or something similar, to let him know something was happening.
I was absolutely fine with the replacement of “at some point during the night Jamie made love to me” or whatever the book line was, with the, um, slightly different scene in the show. I think from the rescue on, that’s my favorite half of any episode so far. You can SEE Jamie’s emotions move from happiness at rescue to learning and accepting that she’s from the future, to realizing this means she is basically still married and want(ed?) to get back to that, to coming to the decision to take her back to the stones and then saying goodbye to her little by little, without her knowing that’s what he’s doing. I thought it was incredibly touching, and very well done by both actors.
I’ve watched it more than once and went back to the book to re-read as well.
Also, REALLY glad they didn’t end the episode with her maybe going through the stones. A tempting cliffhanger, but I’m glad they let us see her decision before closing out the ep. I also loved the “on your feet, soldier” line from ep 1.
I think someone may have already linked this before (the thread is so long, I can’t remember), but there is a woman who does really amusing recaps of Outlander. Here is the recap from last week’s episode (not this week’s). If you like it, you can go back and read her other ones. I think her wedding one was really good, if memory serves. She usually posts them on Wednesdays after the show airs.
If you like Outlander, you might also like the series Poldark, based on a series of novels. This is actually the second time it has been serialized: I say the first version when I was living in England decades ago. This version is excellent so far.
I really enjoyed last Saturday night’s show. LOVED Jenny andn Ian and I think they followed many of the conversations right out of the book. I understand why they had to deviate a bit for the series, but I think all in all it was a good job. I loved listening to Claire explain airplanes to Jamie. I’m a bit disappointed that it looks as if they are hurrying along the idyllic Lallybroch with introducing those raiders at the end. I would have liked to seen another episode of them enjoying their life there. J&C became close there, and I hope they don’t end Lallybroch after just one episode. I think we readers deserve that after some of the episodes that seemed to drag on and on…like dougal raising money.
I also watch Poldark and enjoy it very much. The White Queen isn’t bad either, though neither rise to the level of Outlander, IMO.
Sat night’s show was my least favorite of this half so far, but I only watched it once and I usually enjoy them more after a second viewing. It also might be because not much happened, compared to other episodes. It would be hard to top the week before, with all that went on with the witch trial and Claire’s time traveler revelation and decision to stay with Jamie.
However, there were high points in this one. The family stuff…the very detailed flashbacks to show Brian and the foreshadowing of what is to come with Randall. I do not know how I will make it through that episode, it will be 15, I think. Thank goodness there will be a 16 to recover before what is surely going to be an even longer break until season 2.
PS: I didn’t love the “I love you” revelation. In the book you just have no idea that he felt that way all along, whereas in the series he’s already said he was falling in love with her (during/after the fight after her rescue from Fort William) so it’s not really a shock. I don’t think she said it right back in the book either?
Even though he did say it, somehow it had more impact in the book when he described how he knew she was the one from the moment he looked up at her after his injury during their first interactions.
I’ve only watched through the so where Claire gets arrested with Geilis because we don’t have Starz and I just catch up when the cable company does free weekends etc.
Anyway, up to that point, here’s one of my “issues” - I don’t feel that Claire and Jaime have as much chemistry as I imagined from the book.
I did enjoy re-watching ep 1 “help, stop, he’s going over” after I read the book. Made me look at that scene very differently, and ep 2 (her tending his wound by the fire at Leoch) as well.
Wow. After re-watching The Wedding episode this weekend, I don’t understand how anyone could think that, but of course everyone’s entitled to their own opinions!
The Wedding was very romantic, I agree. I don’t know exactly what it is - maybe it’s the actor? Sam Heughan does a good job, but … I kind of feel like Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) has more smoulder / passion.
Only when she saw his audition tape - not when she saw his photo, which she called “grotesque”! But I agree with her that once he “puts Jamie on” he is perfect. But I saw him before I read him, so my perspective is different I suppose.
Lol, hadn’t heard about the “grotesque” comment. I read all the books beforehand, and I think SH makes a fine Jamie.
No matter who they chose, someone would not have been happy. With such beloved characters, people formulate very strong held views of how those characters look (and behave) to THEM, regardless of how they have been described by the author.
As to Claire seeming like his mother, I can get that sentiment. But one has to remember that Jamie is 23, while she was actually turning 28 on the day that she told Jamie the truth about her birth (she said 27 in the episode, but I could have sworn she was even older in the novel?). At that age, five years age difference could be significant, depending on the couple. Also factor in that she’s from a future era, with a whole different and extensive knowledge base than Jamie, though he is described as being very well educated.
Ooooo, I completely disagree!!! Sam as Jamie has always been good to me, but when he told Claire he believed her and trusted her heart after she told him about her origins, i was completely won over. And the guy who plays Frank/Randall just gives me the total creeps!!!
