I just referred back to Outlander, and the day she tells Jamie about the fact that she is from the future, he points out to her that it is her birthday. She is 28.
I like the actress playing Jenny, sheās really good in the part.
Also agree with othersā comments about Claire and Jamie. There is a lot of skin but no real chemistry between the actors. I think SH is good and the problem is the casting of Claire.
SH does not come across to me as the Jamie who has lived in Paris, is well educated, and will eventually be a printer. He is very handsome, in a fake gym muscle way. He is lacking in depth.
I donāt take anything DG says about it seriously. She is involved in the series, probably to make sure that they didnāt trash her baby, and she probably had some degree of approval over the casting, but her power is limited. She isnāt about to indicate that she thinks there may be any weakness. She wants it to be viewed as a raving success.
@condolationā¦I agree with you. Heās not Jamie, and they are not book Claire and Jamie. Iām not sure anyone could ever be. And I agree that DG would not have anything but positive things to say about Starzā¦not good business, and they are doing a decent job with her story after all! At least for the non book reader. I am trying to view it as just some icing on the cake to watch it, and if I do it that it makes it easier to dismiss all the aboveā¦but sometimes itās disappointing.
I think thatās the case. No way to make everyone happy when you are talking about beloved fictional characters who have been in the readerās consciousness for two decades, over 9 novels.
^ yup. I have come to see the book and series as two separate things, and I enjoy both for some same and some different reasons. I do not think a TV adaptation could ever please everyone or - gasp, horror - a movie or miniseries.
On the chemistry - I DO think they have great on-screen chemistry, with the exception of this last episode. I just wasnāt feeling it, But ALL the ones prior, from ep 1 on, I feel it.
I think you (and many of us) werenāt feeling the chemistry between J & C in the last episode because they sort of changed Jamieās character. He really wasnāt Jamie from the book at all. Jamie would never have spit out that bread for one thing. I know what they were trying to do with the character, but it didnāt work. Claire just seemed so much more mature and wiser than he did in this episode, and I never thought that once in the books.
He was definitely acting like a brat and far less so in the books (or than he had in the show beforeā¦this is the same guy who took a beating for Laoghaire even though he didnāt have feelings for her!), except at the very beginning with Jenny.
But even the āI love youā scene was not what Iād hoped it would be. Though to be honest, in the book it wasnāt what Iād hoped for either, in the sense that I hoped for some seriously romantic stuff there, not a joking-chasing around a chair.
But again, I havenāt watched it twice yet. I do find I see things differently when I do.
I found the chemistry between them to be AWESOME in the preceding episode. I think Iām repeating myself though, sorry
Where do we watch this again? ON DEMAND is only showing through Episode 9 right now? Do we have to watch thru the computer or IPAD? I do agree that there was great chemistry when Claire was telling Jamie her secret. Honestly, I think Catriona is bringing more depth and believability to Claireās character than SH. I think sheās a better actor. SH always seems like he has the same 5 expressions on his face. But I do think heās lovely to look at.
Some observations about the last episode:
1)The "fight"between returning Jamie and pregnant Jenny was much more extreme in the book. DH was surprised at that when I told him. For one, in the show Jenny threatens to grab him by the balls. She actually does this in the book. She also slaps him pretty soundly, and we hear from Ian that this is not the first time.
2)Jamie telling Claire why he married her:
In the book, he first tells Claire he knew he wanted her from the beginning, but the scene is teasing and comical, with him insulting her jokingly even as he declares his fatherās prediction that he would JUST know when he had met āthe oneā had actually come true. Later, as Claire is watching the last vestiges of daylight disappear outside, Jamie comes up from behind and embraces her. She asks why he never told her and he says it would have been a burden on her to know of his desire for her when she didnāt return his feelings, as well as injury to his own pride. She points out that wanting is not the same as loving.
Even later, the two of them are standing against the fence at sunset. Claire tells Jamie that she believes she was born for him. He says āYou know, youāve never said it.ā She replies āNeither have you.ā Again she points out that wanting is not necessarily loving, and Jamie reveals that he fell in love with her the moment she wept in his arms at Leoch. Jamie makes it clear that he wants to hear her say the words. Claire states that this is scary for her, but she finally steps into his arms and tells him āI love you.ā
Now thatās some pretty intense stuff, and I understand that time is limited on the show, but I guess thatās why in the show, it didnāt have the same impact. You didnāt have the build up of the two dancing into and away from the subject. Also, when Claire tells Jamie she loves him, it should have been in close up, because thatās how the scene SEEMS in the book.
All just my humble opinion!
Right with you!
conmama - DVR, or computer on questionably legal sites.
Because I have STARZ, I was able to watch the latest episode on demand. Also, during the trial scene, we were having a storm and lost about 5 minutes of the show. I watched it again on my laptop through the STARZ website. I just had to log in with my provider and password.
I have Starz too. I Went to TV shows. Maybe itās in another section of On Demand.
@conmama, I found my on demand because as I was flipping through the available movies to buy on my Guide function (I have Direct TV), there just happened to be a listing that said āWatch Outlander episodes on Demand.ā I think I just got lucky that day.
Well, what did you all think? I understand why they had to deviate from the story to get Jamie captured quickly, but I didnāt enjoy watching scenes that arenāt from the book. I donāt mind a little deviation, but this was 1/2 of the episode. It worked, especially for the non-reader they donāt know the difference, i just donāt enjoy watching as much. Iām tired of SH five expressions he has. I really like Ian and Jennyā¦they are spot on! I didnāt like Jennyās explanation of how pregnancy feels towards the latter part of the description. thought it was weird reading it, and more so listening to it. All in all, Iām not enjoying the show as much with Part 2 as I did Part 1. Not sure why.
I was watching Call the Midwife last night, and the actress who plays Laoghaire was on the show! It took me a couple of seconds - thinking āwhere have I seen that actress before?ā
Iām finding my memory is pretty bad - I probably need to re-read the books to compare.I read somewhere for this episode they used material from one of the novellas, Virgins, which tells the story of Jamie and Ian fighting as mercenaries.
I read that the novella was used for one of the conversations between Jamie and Ian. George Clooney is in NY filming a movie with Julia Roberts and Catriona is in it. Itās due out later this year, looking forward to it.
I think they used Virgins as well as the graphic novel for some of this stuff.
I liked this episode better than the previous one but neither has topped the ātrial rescue/Iām from the future/stones/decision to stayā episode for me. And honestly, i could have used a little more J&C bonding before he got captured and presumably not reunited with her until Wentworth.
I am dreading the next two episodes.
