If you are a fan of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

Uhmmmm…I thought it was…

VERY well done. ;)

And I forgive this Jamie for only being 6’3 rather than 6’4". Lol. :D

At first when they opened with the end of the wedding I thought “THAT’S IT???” Of course as the episode unfolded, I loved how they “replayed” the wedding kind of through Claire and Jamie’s eyes as they talked about it. I agree the whole episode was very, very well done. My DH and I actually watched this instead of football!

Overall, like the episode. Three things I did not like: now that she already has a ring does that mean we will not see the jealousy scene when they get back to the castle and Jamie goes to buy Claire the ring?, did I miss the “trust” and no lying talk Jamie gives Claire, and I missed the part where Claire recognizes the church as the same one her and Frank were married in.

^^^^^You are right on all counts.

The only two things which bothered me were:

In the book she is blown away when she sees Jamie all cleaned up and in his Fraser plaid. We really didn’t get that here.

I loved that “We may not tell each other everything, but let everything we tell each other be the truth” speech in the book and regretted that they didn’t include it in the show.

Oh, and also: In the book, she faints after the ceremony and wakes up to Jamie cradling her head in his lap and saying “was it all that bad?” That particular scene is replayed in a later book to great effect, so I was sorry they didn’t include it.

But, they have to make cuts. They are not going to please all of us who have read the books.

I loved it! I’ve been reading reviews and even found DG commenting on this stuff on her compuserve forum. She said the “honesty” speech will be shown later, but not necessarily in the same context as in the book. I also wished they had included some of my favorite bits, but they included others ones not in the book that I loved…so it evens out. I did like the wedding preparations from Jamie’s POV, but I do agree that they could have made mention of how outstanding Jamie looked…maybe us just seeing him it didn’t need to be said?. What I didn’t like was Ellen’s Necklace. It is such a distinctive necklace and is used throughout the series. Bree goes to the historical museum and sees it on an old painting of Ellen. I’ve watched it twice, and am looking forward to watching it again. DG said to watch for 2 things Sam does that is small. When they are lying together after the first time, he is strumming his fingers on his chest (he strums alot in the book) and when he sleeps there is a small smile, but it can be missed very easily if you aren’t looking for it. Remember, he smiles in his sleep when he’s happy.

^^^^^I saw it, I saw it! Noticed both! :)

A lot of fans were upset that Jamie didn’t wear his scarlet Fraser plaid, and so no wonder she didn’t realize how resplendent he looked.

I have to say, it was brilliant piece of filming when they showed Claire approaching her dropped ring as a reflection in it; her looking at her hands, each one with a wedding ring on it, was great.

Another add on not from the novel was the concept of Jamie using a key for her ring. Key to what? Intriguing.

Argh. Who in the world is Ellen? I have read the book (am on maybe the 5th one now?). I miss my brain!

Ellen was Jamie’s late mother.

Yes, Ellen is Jamie’s mother. I betcha that was the key to Lallybroch. DG did say the show really picks up from here on (you know how it’s been kind of plodding along a bit?) Also about the necklace…remember when Bree throws it down in front of everyone when she is back at Lallybroch, in front of Jenny and Laoghaire? Anybody could have a long set of pearls. I just have a feeling the pearls just aren’t a big part of the adaptation.

Ahh, gotcha!

I imagine a long string of pearls was not all that common back then, but you are right it’s not really a remarkable necklace.

On the other hand, that dress! I can only imagine all the wedding gowns to come that have some kind of nod to that design with the leaves embroidered on it, the gauzy off-th-shoulder sleeves, the bodice embroidery (and the décolletage!!! )and the over-skirt, etc.

I wish we could link to blogs, but this one is easy to find if you search Terry Dresbach (the name of her blog is An 18th Century Wife). She’s Ron Moore’s wife and the lead costume designer for the series. She was also a big fan of Outlander and encouraged Ron to produce Outlander. She has a close up picture of the pearls on her web site, and they very much look like the pearls described in the book. She admits that she was pushing for a shorter strand of pearls but I guess someone overruled her. I’m thinking a man who wanted to see them lay across her chest as seen on last night’s episode…lol

Also, if you are really interested in the making of Outlander, Ron Moore does a podcast after each episode and Terry has also joined him on a few of them. They follow along with the episodes, so it’s helpful to have the show on mute as they describe each scene. So far, they haven’t uploaded the podcast to 107. <a href=“Watch Outlander Online: Stream Full Series on STARZ”>STARZ - Series;

In the show he said that when he saw her at the wedding, it was as if “the sun had just come out”. In the book, that is Claire’s reaction when she sees him in his full, bright, Fraser regalia.

Who was the young man having a bible reciting contest with the sick priest?

Yes…it had to be a man that overruled the pearls. The longer ones are more “sexier”. In the books, I don’t think the pearls were so round…they did have the gold between them, then larger pearls attached to the gold. Much more decorative and distinct (and shorter). It’s just one of those things I always enjoyed reading about, as I LOVE jewelry. I would have loved to see him give them to her to wear with her dress. I hated that low bodice on her dress. Made her boobs look really weird from the side. I read on Terry’s website that it did have delicate lace to hide more, but it kept coming off when they would retake shots of them taking off her cloak and they won’t stop filming to fix something like that.

When they talk about them being “only Scotch pearls”, I envisioned baroque or fresh water pearls which would make a more interesting and antique looking necklace.

I agree too that her corset was painful looking. Her boobs pushed up so much that the area below them was disturbingly concave. She is very thin and it didn’t do her justice.

I think they were trying to stay somewhat true to the book in that Claire’s wedding dress was too tight as it was not custom fitted and was made for a less buxom woman. The actress doesn’t have Claire’s figure as described in the books, so it was kind of strange to see her pushed so tight that she popped out on top, and as you said greenwitch, concave below.

You know…I am a regular at Ladies of Lallybroch if you all haven’t heard of the place. It’s a wonderful forum, and there is a great section that just discusses the show! If you aren’t familiar with it, you should check it out. I go by the name Conmama there too, so wave at me if you do visit. It’s a very positive place!

One of the comments to a review called that dress “a walking mammogram.” LOL.

LOL! Hilarious!

For some reason, it has been my impression that they were a simple but fairly unique strand of pinkish baroque/fresh water pearls…and not long.

Not long… I agree. Didn’t Murtagh carry it around in his sporran along with many other small items?
