I think I’d go to Mexico - know a few people there & they love it; friends/family have enjoyed their vacays there; and it’s a little bit more affordable than other vacation places - history and pretty beaches.
I thought @momo2x2018 wanted suggestions other than places like where they live (near beach and skiing). That’s why I suggested Phoenix.
Maybe she can clarify!
I would NOT go out of the country. You don’t want to be “stuck” somewhere and have that mess with starting the new job.
I would not be comfortable flying anywhere.
I would go to a vacation rental house w/in driving distance with outdoor activities. I could see driving to Florida for a warm beach week. I would not eat in restaurants. We are very COVID cautious and masks are on at all times inside unless we are at home.
I would pick a warm weather city where most activities/dining could be done outside.
What island will you be on?
I would take a rafting trip down the Rio Grande River, in the Big Bend area of Texas.
Without planning?
Culebra
Been twice, love it, know the budget, etc.
With plenty of planning/lead time we’re headed to St. John for the first time this April. Accommodations are pretty expensive there, so we’ll be doing Airbnb. (We’ll be out and about all day anyway… just need bed, shower and bathroom… and WiFi)
I think it’s probably easier to do things with a little spontaniety these days than in “normal” times – at least in a place like Big Bend. Maybe with some shorter-term planning involved; but I don’t mind winging it a bit. (If I’m wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time!)
Our family went to St. John about 10 years ago; and loved it. (Notwithstanding the expense.)
We used Low-Key Watersports, here, https://divelowkey.com/ for a couple of water-based outings.
St Thomas - with a car so we can explore it all and St John. Debating whether to take our own scuba equipment or rent. It’s been two years now since we’ve used ours (sigh).
As I recall, there are several water taxis and ferries that leave from several points on St. Thomas to St. John. There are many lovely beaches on St. John!
We will be very close to one of the ferries. The two islands are very close to each other.
Not only are we vacationing (working vacation for H), we’re checking out the place to see if we want to buy a condo there. Other islands are also on our list (Grenada, Barbados, BVI are near the top), but this year with Covid, USVI is the one we’re able to contemplate easily. It has advantages of being an easy flight away and being US so working isn’t a problem. Then too it’s near other islands for H (who is a sailing enthusiast). The big disadvantages are the hurricane belt, being really small islands (not so much to explore), and the crime rates aren’t great. Should the US devolve into a Civil War, being US can switch to a con too.
We’ll see what we think when we’re there. In the meantime, there are waters and mountains to be explored. I received a call from the car rental place this morning. While chatting with the lady on the other end I mentioned it’s 12 degrees here. She said it’s 75 there and she had to close her windows because she felt cold. We’d be opening them up and basking!
Have you considered Grand Cayman for a condo? My family has vacayed there several times, and there is easy access via air to the island.
I have fond memories of Barbados as well; the wife and I honeymooned there. And we spent a lovely week, before children, in the BVI. How time flies!
Too flat for us. Bahamas too. We like mountainous islands. I think Barbados has enough topography change to it. Time will tell. I also want to see what goes on politically there now that they left the Monarchy.
Right now I would go to SoCal and visit S who lives right by the beach. I’m not a lay out on the sand person but I love to walk/run there and I like the vibe.
Kiawah Island, SC
Since it’s mother/daughter, I’d scour Airbnb and VRBO and grab a small condo in Maui (there are some very good deals there if you scour, like in the Kihei area), it’s whale watch season, the weather is divine, and I’d enjoy doing a bit of hiking, some water sport (snorkeling, kayaking, whale watching), and some evening stargazing.
If you like the outdoors and such, Page, AZ- Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, maybe a boat tour of Lake Powell (not sure they are open now), hike Buckskin Gulch, make day trips to Grand Canyon or Bryce or Zion depending on the snow that week.
It’s elevation 4600 so not hot AZ but plenty of outdoorsy stuff to do if that’s your thing
@somemom - when we were at Horseshoe Bend last year we were sure we were going to see someone die as they tried to get their Instagram photo on the edge!
