If you had the opportunity to vacation for a week, spur-of-the-moment

where would you go in this current ‘covid’ climate?

ETA: We live at the beach and close to ski resorts. My D starts her first ‘big girl job’ the beginning of February. I thought it would be nice to take her someplace for a week before she starts. Lots of good flight deals at the moment…

I think it really depends on where you live.

I personally would go someplace I know I would enjoy, within driving distance, and stay at an AirBNB.

For myself, skiing out west.

But what do you like in a vacation?

San Diego or some other place where there are lots of outdoor recreation opportunities like hiking or beach walking.

Well, we’re heading to the USVI for the month of Feb, so I’m hoping we like it there!

For you… what does your daughter enjoy? That would influence my choice for the trip you’re looking for. Is she into museums, history, hiking, etc?

No beach then if you live near one.

Stowe, Vermont

Taking beach and skiing out of the picture, I’d do a big city in the south where you could still eat outdoors and see sights. Maybe Charleston,SC?

Under NORMAL circumstances I’d choose Southern California. I may D2 for a week in May somewhere between her graduation and her boards and we were thinking NYC……but it’s these CIRCUMSTANCES that get in the way!

Because we are quite COVID careful where ever we would pick we would limit ourselves to places where we can be outside a lot and dine outside.

I’ve heard an awful lot of people talking Key West lately.

San Diego would be nice. Or Phoenix. In Phoenix, you could enjoy out door dining good hiking, and you could go to the Chihuli exhibit at the Desert Botanical Gardens (if tickets are available)….and go to the MIM (Museum of Instrumental Music)….totally worth the trip to phoenix.

Palm Springs - sun, lots to do, trendy shops, great food and people watching plus day trip to Joshua Tree National Park. Or completely different vibe would be NYC.

I second Phoenix!

For me, it’d be northern Kauai.

That would be one of my choices, but Hawaii is probably out of the running here if the OP wants to go before early February. Last minute HI accommodations are probably too expensive, and rental cars are still overpriced.

Depends on what you’re looking to do and whether you have a preference on how far you want to travel? In the past 9 months I’ve been to Marco Island, Phoenix/Scottsdale, USVI and Park City, UT……but we like to hike, bike, golf and go to the beach. I love anywhere in CA but maybe that’s where you live?

I’d second Palm Springs if you want something different from water and mountains and want some relaxing time together. Palm Springs itself has an interesting art museum and there is lovely outdoor dining all around. There’s also the Living Desert Zoo and Indian Canyons. Joshua Tree could be an all day trip or two days with an overnight. Some friends enjoyed their time at Desert Hot Springs.

I’d indulge in the luxury of the Woodstock Inn in Vermont and cross-country ski. Phoenix/Scottsdale has nothing on this place.

That’s a good one…but I’m betting it’s booked! Woodstock inn is gorgeous.

If you like to ski, you could go to Deer Valley in Utah–it’s not too far from Salt Lake City. I’m not a skier but my kids are. When we went to the resort they’d never been skiing outside of New England and were thrilled with the skiing at Deer Valley. We stayed at the Stein Erickson Lodge, which was lovely. There are lots of rental options in the area (near Park City). There’s also ice skating and snowshoeing (which is what I did) and other winter activities.
