if you have any questions for us...

Yup, the gym is open from like 6 or 8 or something until midnight. I bring reading to do which allows me to actually get a good deal of work done while at the gym. The average student only spends 40 hours in class/doing homework a week, so that's not really that bad. Symbolic Systems, Human Biology, International Relations, Science Technology and Society, etc. are all interdisciplinary majors... and then you also have American Studies, Feminist Studies, African and African American Studies, etc.

How do you get work done at the gym? Like reading a book on the bicycle? And is there a pool at Ariallaga?

For the record, I always thought it was pronounced the way it's spelled, until someone told me it was "ariayaga."

Are outside scholarships first used to pay off student loans or work study? Can you choose which one to pay off first? Because I really do not want to take out loans unless it is absolutely necessary...

Is there one cell phone service provider that has better reception at stanford than another? like verizon or t-mobile?

i think someone mentioned that cingular has the best coverage. will go well with an iphone. ;)

^I would suggest Cingular Cingular Cingular. Verizon is just bad here and T mobile only works half the time so if I were you I'd definitely get cingular.

thanks! now i can get an iphone (or whatever they'll call it after cisco sues them)

Hello I am a recent Stanford Admit student and had a question for current students. What is the minority population like? Are there alot of african americans and would you suggest living in the house that is culturally themed, would apprecite answers.thxs!

^hahaha I'm in a perfect position to answer that question!
So first of all I live in Ujamaa (the african american themed dorm) and it's great. This place is fun and cool, there are themed programs every week if you care to go to them, there certainly is a lot of african americans here but not everyone is (only half the freshman are-for example I'm not!). However if you want your dorm to be quiet you're going to hsve to find somewhere else cuz in Uj things can get pretty loud (not everywhere in Uj but in certain areas).

Ok, I have another question. Regarding summer courses at Stanford, do you know if I have to apply to the high school summer program or the undergraduate one? also, could you guys suggest some fun courses I could take? i was thinking about math 51 and some writing or literature class but i don't want to have too many classes- maybe around 10 credits or so.

You could probably do the undergraduate one, since you're an admit. Give the registrar's office a ring and see what they say. They should also be able to provide you with a course catalog you can look through.

thxs superwizard...that sounds interesting...what are the dorms like cause im kinda used to having my own bedroom and bathroom..does each room have a bathroom?

Each dorm does not have their own bathroom, and you will almost for sure not have your own bedroom. The majority of freshmen are put into 1-room doubles, which means there is one big room for two people. It's supposed to be a bonding experience ^_^ Get to know a new person, share living space, learn to cooperate... it almost always works out. After freshman year, you will enter the housing draw, in which you are assigned a random number and are allowed to pick where to live based on what number you have. I was 412 or something like that and got to live in Serra, where I have a humongous single (a room all to myself). Singles are very popular... like you, many people like to have their own space. Another nice alternative is a 2-room double; there is a thin wall and a door separating the two rooms (inner and outer); you can only exit to the hallway through the outer room. This also gives privacy but is more intimate than having totally separate rooms. There are other (generally less favorable) room arrangements such as a 1-room triple, 2-room triple, 3-room quad... But again, you won't be able to choose where you live until sophomore year and on.

k that sounds good...i didnt mean to come across as a spoiled brat...so theres no chance of getting into a theme house as a freshman?? and i am asuumin that theres community bathrooms???bout how many ppl to a bathroom...a whole floor???

There's absolutely a chance of getting into a theme house as a freshman. I think your options are all frosh, 4-class, FroSoCo, SLE, and specific theme houses. What we meant is that you can't choose Cedro or Twain - you can't pick a specific dorm (with the exception of theme houses - you can choose to be in the Asian theme dorm, for example). I should emphasize that you will actually be ranking your priorities; you can put Casa Zapata first on your list, but there's no guarantee you'll get it. You may have to write a brief essay, but I don't recall.

Yes, there are bathrooms on each hall. There is almost never a problem with too many people in a bathroom. A bathroom is perhaps for about 25-30 people, but again, I emphasize that it's really not a problem. Usually there's one bathroom on a floor; there are multiple stalls, sinks, and showers.

Oh, and Verizon isn't that bad. It's best on East Campus, and it's not so great if you're on the first floor of a building. It's definitely usable. I really like Verizon because it's great everywhere else, and my whole family is on Verizon, so I talk to them for free.

I hear T-mobile is terrible. My gf gets reception in her dorm room and that's it.

EDIT: I just noticed.. I "hear"? Hahaha I'm so punny =)

Basically, the only service that works on this campus is CINGULAR. It happens that way because stanford signed a deal with cingular. We even get discounts as stanford students if we sign up for cingular packages - I got my deal for $45 a month and it's only 9.99 per additional line (so you can buddy up with a friend and pay just $20 some each month provided you dont go over the minute limits). T-mobile is really bad...I had that at first when I came to stanford and I had to buy another cingular cell phone just so I could use my phone. Verizon is REALLY iffy...my boyfriend has verizon and it's okay in some parts of campus but REALLY bad for other parts. He has to go outside of his room and walk around outside if he ever wants to use his phone where he lives. So cingular is the best!

wow i sound like a cingular sales rep. i'm not i swear haha.

I have verizon and it works for me, but I am on East campus. It also works everywhere else outside of Stanford, and my whole family has it so it's very practical. It tends to work okay throughout campus, just not in any buildings, which is actually a good thing because it won't go off during class :)

To get into a theme dorm, you do not need to write an essay or apply, you just have to rank it high on your preference list. At least in last year's housing app, FroSoCo was the only dorm requiring an application.

what dorm would u guys rate as ur fav?
