If you're considering Exeter / going to Exeter...

Oh noez another Andover vs. Exeter thread!

sorry about that, I didn’t intend for this to happen, I just wanted to correct some misconceptions. I’ll PM exonian16. Sorry, Bye!

ahahaha the Exeter vs. Andover rivalry is so intense.

tell me about it. its because they’re both the best of the best. makes even tougher competition. its sort of fun though :D

Technicalities, thanks for your input. Your description of revisit day corresponded nicely with my son’s impression. It was a factor that sold us on Exeter.

@Exonian16
What happened to the Andover students at the Exeter-Andover day football game?

naturallynerdy: we got destroyed…

Before I say anything, I just want to say that I think BOTH are great institutions and unique in their own ways. The only reason why I didn’t apply to Exeter is becasue I never heard of it before my revisit (applied in 5 days, only heard of deerfield cuz lots of friends go there, and andover because my church pastor recommended it to me).

Just want to point out some things.

1) Revisit days are structured to be NORMAL DAYS. The talent shows were to show what PA has to offer outside of classes that the students don’t get to see while at the actual revisit

2) Academic buildings are pretty close…like less than 2 minute walk for slow walkers.
3) as for dorms, people CHOOSE to live down far away from campus to be close to downtown, or to have more of a “home” dorm (the dorms further away from campus are small, large rooms, and are literal houses).
3) PA doesn’t suck at sports. We’ve been undefeated in boys swimming for the past 3 years, number 2 in the country for crew, have had the most new england championships in Outdoor track than any school in new england, and I don’t know about any of the other sports lol. Exeter, granted, is VERY good at sports too (football, soccer, hockey, water polo, etc.)
4) PA vs. PEA is all friendly competition. It’s all in sport, and nobody really hates eachother (trust me, if we did, I’d be cautious around PEA campus on A/E day, as would exeter kids).

Not trying to cause a contreversy, just some facts.

Exonian16, quit bashing. you don’t even got to exeter yet. Just promote your school and I’ll promote mine. No need to tear down a school. And also about the vandalism of dorms, yes andover townies hate us, but it really doesn’t affect anyone (nobody cries/is hurt). People just laugh at the pranks they pull and walk away. and they never throw things (maybe an empty, crushed soda can, but that’s it) because we have cameras on the streets. and Secondly, the harkness table thing, why does it matter? yes it is an innovation in learning, but it isn’t the pinacle of it. I have sat in a harkness classroom (teacher used to teach at exeter and taught in harkness on our spirit day). I have to admit I do like the concept in history/english, but can’t really see it working in math/science. Just my opinion. Also, at PA, the english, history and languages are run in discussion format.

I could’ve said MANY bad things about Exeter, but have chosen not to because I RESPECT the fact that both are great institutions and that it’s up to the candidate to decide what’s better, we’re not in position to try and entice them by bashing the opposing school.

I hope you respect that we’re a friendly community and respect one another

@technicalities You are my hero right now. This gave me hope. Maybe I will get off the wait list(: You made my day! Hahaha, oh and if this says some crazy time like 2:30 AM, its because I don’t live on the East Coast.

I’m assuming that the dress code only applies to classes, so if you were going to lunch at the caf. or just hanging out, what would students typically wear?

Since there’s a lot of speculation about Harkness, I’ll go into it a bit more -

ENGLISH/RELIGION/HISTORY: Harkness works best. Counts for 40-70% of your course grade. It’s impossible to get away with not studying in English. Teachers take a backseat role.
MATH: Harkness is integral to understanding. Students present problems. Counts for 0-50% of your course grade. Teachers are a lot more involved.
SCIENCE: Harkness not as important, more traditional (students ask questions, teacher answers). Counts for 0-25% of your course grade, usually.

@PieLover: Literally anything. Dress code applies to the classroom setting and Assembly. That’s it. Some students (like me) change right out of dress code right after their last class. It’s certainly not out of place to wear dress code, but it’s not required or customary.

@swimdude006: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Andover. They BOTH have their advantages. The school that clicks is the school for you, always. Remember that, guys!

Technicalities: i understand completley. Just trying to tell exonian16 not to get too hyped up bout the rivalry, and to go to the extent if makong accusations and pointing iut its flaws (every school has them, even GLADSCHEMS?

From this Phillipian, more on students and traffic at Andover:

Memorial Bell Tower Crosswalk Scene of Car Crash; One Driver Injured
Stephen
Moreland Thursday, April 12, 2012
An unidentified Andover student dashing across Main Street caused a two-car accident on Monday around 9:50 a.m.

Although no Andover students were injured, one driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries from the accident.

The Town of Andover Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident. Andover Police directed traffic away from the accident, while the Fire Department cleaned up debris. Phillips Academy Public Safety (PAPS)…

^^^maybe exeter should start recruiting nicer kids, unlike you. Honestly, stop it with the bashing. It’s not doing anyone any good, and putting a smiley face at the end of the sentence doesn’t make it any better. And the situation was once again, not explained in detail. They were crossing at the light, car didn’t see the kid, stopped, another car didn’t see the other car, and then crashed.

Let Exonian16 prove how Exeter he is. No one gives a care anyways.

Exeter students are every bit as prone to crossing busy streets right in front of cars. Time to move on to a more useful topic, I think!

Thank you, classicalmama.

I’d like to steer this thread back on track; my original purpose was to provide insight about Exeter and to answer questions.

To everyone who has instigated arguments or fights on this thread, I urge you to be careful. When you post here, whether you are aware of it or not, you represent your school. Please don’t go bashing each other’s schools in an attempt to give yourself an empty feeling of superiority. After all, on this board (and in life in general), we’re all just trying to find our way and carve a path for ourselves, right? I’m sure each and every one of you on this board is ambitious, talented, and nice. You don’t have to put each other’s schools (and by extension, each other) down. CC should be a community. Together, we can make it one. That process begins with you.

I hope this can settle all of the recent arguments.

Anyways… any more questions?

^^^Amen to that :D

My son was just taken off the WL for Exeter and will be attending in the Fall. It is possible.

^Congrats to your son!!! That is great news! My daughter will also begin in the fall. Is your son a new 9th grader?

With all of the communication from the school this week regarding registration, class placement, etc…she is now beside herself with excitement!
