Personally I am a book worm because of my late dad. He really pushed me to study since I was a kid. And the house had many old books u never heard of.
And I live a pretty respectable life because of a good influence, no drinking, drugs, etc in my lifestyle. Maybe I am more committed to my studies because of of all tht.

1) How do you think being low-income has affected your education?

not too significantly but i guess i am missing some of the extras that my class mates do. like i dont have tutors, testing prep, admissions counselors (if ppl even use them anymore), or cool summer programs

2) Which elite schools are you applying to (and if you care to elaborate, why?)?

ivies, MIT, Caltech, some liberal arts. most ppl dont realize the elite colleges are actually quite affordable b/c of the fin aid. lotsa ppl around here (nj) are telling us to go rutgers b/c its 'more affordable'

3) Are your parents/school counselors/friends supportive of your elite school ambitions? Do they have faith you will get in? yes

4) Do you have faith you will get in? yes

5) Do your parents/counselors/friends know about the financial incentives at the elites? parents & i do. friends that are applying to the same places do, others not so much. counselors--maybe?

well where not low low income...but less then most ppl in NYC and i didnt grow up in the best of neighborhoods so here goes...

1) How do you think being low-income has affected your education?

Honestly, not too much. I happen to be really good at soccer so i'm on scholarship to a really good day school. I guess i don't have test prep or paying for summer programs but i never really wanted that anyway lol. It affected my attitude i guess in that people expect certain things from me based on where i come from and it makes you want to do better i guess..

2) Which elite schools are you applying to (and if you care to elaborate, why?)?

MIT, H-vard, Brown. Mainly because Brown has been a dream school since forever, i went to MITES at MIT and loved it there, and my bro went to Harvard so my parents made me apply

3) Are your parents/school counselors/friends supportive of your elite school ambitions? Do they have faith you will get in?

Yes they do, especially after my brother. They probably have too much faith and underestimate the number and the fact that they reject perfectly qualified students because of space constraints. And I'm only waiting for Harvard anyway. I got in MIT early, and the coach is recruiting me to play at Brown so i have LL.

4) Do you have faith you will get in?

yes, i guess only because I'm a recruited athlete though.

5) Do your parents/counselors/friends know about the financial incentives at the elites?

Yes, my parents do. After only paying a couple thousands for my bro to go to Harvard they made it the job to get us in a top schools since they're generous. And after witnessing my bro go to Harvard law and start a job with a HIGH HIGH salary they knew what doors the name of the school opened for you so yep

1) How do you think being low-income has affected your education?
My education seems to have a more personal value compared to most people. I feel compelled to do well in school because my actions will dramatically affect my immediate family. Similarly, I want to defy statistics that define us as dropouts and life-long public assistance abusers.

2) Which elite schools are you applying to (and if you care to elaborate, why?)?
I applied to a couple of elite schools but Bowdoin was my first choice. I was accepted ED II with a fantastic financial aid package.

3) Are your parents/school counselors/friends supportive of your elite school ambitions? Do they have faith you will get in?
Yes! My college counselor encouraged me to apply to elite schools because they are looking for greater socio-economic diversity. Moreover, the elite schools can help low-income students establish social networks that will enable them (us) to have more comfortable lives. Also, the resources that elite schools have are top-notch and plentiful. Of course my family is supportive with everything.

4) Do you have faith you will get in?
I got into Bowdoin, so I'm happy!

5) Do your parents/counselors/friends know about the financial incentives at the elites?

Since I attend an elite private school, many of the students, faculty, and the college counselors know about the financial aid incentives at these schools. However, my family knows little about the entire process. I think it's imperative that we spread the word to students with similar backgrounds.

1) How do you think being low-income has affected your education? It hasn't had a huge negative impact. I live in the suburbs and go to a decent public school. I haven't had the money for SAT tutoring, college summer programs and such, but I don't think it's really hurt me.
2) Which elite schools are you applying to (and if you care to elaborate, why?)? Columbia, because I'm in love with it, pure and simple. I'm also applying to NYU, Boston College and UC Berkeley- I think that's the limit of what CCers would consider elite.
3) Are your parents/school counselors/friends supportive of your elite school ambitions? Do they have faith you will get in? Yes, yes, yes. They've supported me all the way, and encouraged me to go for the best schools.
4) Do you have faith you will get in? Ugh, I'm such a paranoid senior. I'm scared. I do think I can get into at least one of the four schools I listed above, though. Columbia and UC Berkeley aren't very likely for me, but I think I have a shot at NYU and BC.
5) Do your parents/counselors/friends know about the financial incentives at the elites? I've discussed it with my parents. My friends and counselors don't know, and frankly, I don't think it's any of their business. A lot of the people living around me are much wealthier, and discussing financial stuff with them makes me twitchy. =/

Ok.
I go to a very small rural high school in Kansas. My family's income is about 35,000. I am applying to Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Caltech, and Cornell. My counselor is somewhat naive in believing that most will accept me. My brother did get accepted to MIT, the only elite school he applied to.

The other possibility is that perhaps people aren't comfortable volunteering their financial status with no reason, particularly if they think everyone else makes more...

When you refer to income and when colleges refer to income, do they mean pre-tax or post-tax income?

1) How do you think being low-income has affected your education?

It hasn't, because everyone in my family is highly educated and places a huge priority on academics. The only thing I can think of is that I can't afford to attend expensive summer learning programs.

2) Which elite schools are you applying to (and if you care to elaborate, why?)?

I don't know, I haven't applied to schools yet.

3) Are your parents/school counselors/friends supportive of your elite school ambitions? Do they have faith you will get in?

Sure. But I live in an affluent area, so I'm surrounded by people with elite school aspirations.

4) Do you have faith you will get in?

It's 50/50 that I'll get into my top choice school, or less. But I'm optimistic as well as realistic.

5) Do your parents/counselors/friends know about the financial incentives at the elites?

They know, because I've told them. But my mom was willing to pay full list price for the top schools even if it meant spending all her savings/ taking out loans. I wouldn't have let her, so those new programs are a relief :)

1) How do you think being low-income has affected your education?
i only applied two privates, don't think it affected me because I got in one of them already.

2) Which elite schools are you applying to (and if you care to elaborate, why?)?
does USC count? i'm only applying to CA schools and obviously stanford is out of reach.

3) Are your parents/school counselors/friends supportive of your elite school ambitions? Do they have faith you will get in?
yes

4) Do you have faith you will get in?
no didn't expect to get in so I was shocked when I received admit package.

5) Do your parents/counselors/friends know about the financial incentives at the elites?
they know but I'm still waiting on fin aid package to decide.
