Be careful though, I wouldn't go by the rating site too much other than for comparing professors within a college. Don't use it to compare professors in different institutions since students at other schools will have NO idea what the profs will be like at a particular school (unless they're transfer students, which would be very helpful).

rytis,

No problem! Just be sure to take all of the comments on ratemyprofessors.com with a grain of salt...some comments make absolutely no sense and are completely false.

That website is great, but as a current Lafayette student, you gain access to student course evaluations off of the Lafayette website. These evaluations are published online for every course each semester, and help students select courses and professors. Even though you do not have access to this resource (it requires a userid and password you do not yet have), rest assured that it awaits your perusal as you select courses for subsequent semesters.

As a first-year student, you really have little information to go on, which is quite a shame. Most students have no choice but to select courses and professors blindly. Attending one of the June Academic Advising Days (June 8th-10th) may help to a certain extent in selecting suitable courses.

Take care,

ridethecliche,

What are you still doing roaming around these parts? Do you feel a lingering sense of guilt after passing up Lafayette's offer of admission? Having second thoughts?

I can hear Wesleyan's boards calling for your presence...

J

(I kid, I kid!)

What can I say, I've been around the block :-P

Thanks candyman, thats good to hear.

have you ever seen the jazz ensemble? can you tell me anything about them?

certifiedsoulman,

I actually have yet to see the jazz ensemble perform in the Williams Center for the Arts. I have, however, enjoyed numerous jazz performances by famous musicians sponsored by the college.

Since I know very little about the program, I encourage you to visit the Music Department homepage at http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~music/ and explore the site thoroughly. There is a section with a short description of the jazz ensemble contained within that website, as well as information on our facilities, faculty, and courses offered in the music department.

I will make sure to attend a jazz ensemble performance next semester. As you might imagine, there is just not enough time to see and do everything that college has to offer in one year!

Peace,

What is Lafayette ID/student number, which is on the First-Year seminar registration card and course registration worksheet?

How to know my Lafayette ID?

rytis,

Your Lafayette ID would look something like this:

L03619339

The letter "L" followed by eight digits. I believe this number was provided to you on some of the admission/financial aid documents you received in your initial admissions packet.

J

candyman,

Thanks, after searching through all of my Lafayette papers, it turned out that it was written in the letter of acknowledgment of receipt of my application.

rytis,

Glad I could help you out there!

J

Hey J!

I haven't received anything in the mail yet, but I'm trying to understand how the registration process for first year students goes. I've seen the catalogs online, but there are only schedules for the FYS. Where can I find all the courses offered on the fall semester and their schedules? Should I worry about this yet or not? I'm asking because a lot of people are already deciding, and I'm starting to feel a bit lost!

Thanks.

ediaz,

You should have already received materials in the mail to help you decide on your fall course schedule. The course registation booklet is available online at http://www.lafayette.edu/admissions/download_reg_guide.html to help you choose courses depending on your prospective major.

However, you also need to refer to the meeting times of each course so that you do not create any time conflicts. These meeting times are published in what looks like a newspaper, along with the professors teaching each section. This newspaper is NOT published online. You really need to contact the Registrar's Office at (610) 330-5090 or email them at registrar@lafayette.edu to get these materials in print form.

Along with the registration booklet and newspaper, you will receive a registration card to fill out. This card is due June 12 for those students not attending one of the June Academic Advising Sessions. You really need to get these materials as soon as possible, ediaz, so make the effort to get in contact with the college TODAY!

I hope everything works out for you.

J

candyman, you're so enthusiastic :D
I wanna ask if there is any penalty for using P2P network and cracked softwares :( ?

hlvietlong,

Even though a school penalty probably exists for using P2P/cracked software, to my knowledge, no one has ever faced any consequences. However, as I'm sure you know, copyright laws still exist. I have not heard of anyone getting in trouble with the college, but who knows which governmental agency is watching our every download...

The college does limit/shape bandwidth for certain programs (such as P2P and online gaming), but later at night, it seems that the internet is wide open. Sometimes, however, due to simultaneous downloading of illegal materials around campus, the internet slows to a crawl. The reason for this: some students would rather download movies off of the internet than legally buy the DVDs.

Please know that I AM NOT CONDONING ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS AND/OR SOFTWARE PIRACY. I always abide by all copyright laws, and if you choose not to, that is your decision.

Peace,

J

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to point out that this thread has surpassed 10,000 views. This is no small feat for ANY thread, especially for a thread in a specific college (non-Ivy) forum.

Here's to keeping it going for another 10,000 views. Hopefully, the next 10,000 views will prove to be educational for those doing the viewing.

Hooray!

J

Well is there any prob if I'm bringing my HDD (which contains many illegal movies, games and music) along?

hlvietlong,

The college will not have any problem if you decide to bring your HDD.

J

Hey J!
i've been emailing Dean Robbins about the course registration. He's going to help me to get it done on time (even though I still haven't received anything in the mail). Still, I would like your opinion.
I'm planning to take FYS 127 (I hope I get it), MATH 161, PHYS 111 (for the lab requirement), and ????
Do you think I should take a foreign language (or can I take a spanish exam (I'm a native spanish speaker) ¡viva la Ñ! jaja What would you reccomend for my fourth course? Is there an elementary chinese class? I would love that!

Thanks,

ediaz.

j,

just a question that just came up...
How formal should you be regarding teachers, authoritities? I'm asking becuase I don't know if it is okay to start my emails with...

Dear Ron,
Mr. Robbins,
Dean Robbins,

etc...

In ecuador we're used to call most people by their first name, how does that work in the US?

Thanks again!
