I had forgotten about the heat/humdity. How could I forget!!!

We didn't take grandparents w/ us to I-day and, considering the walking, the heat, and the emotions, I am REAL glad we did not.
One grandparent went with us to PPW. He is in good shape, walks regularly, etc. It was hard on him nonetheless. I am REAL glad we did not bring the grandmother, she could not have made it.

DO NOT BRING THE ELDERLY unless you have a wheelchair [and they are willing to use it], are prepared for the heat/humidity and somebody is willing to tend to them. Don't do it!

thank you everyone for taking the time to respond- it is very much appreciated!

I don't know at this point how successful I will be at keeping family away from I-Day...as they say, the dye is already cast- but based on what Bill0510 said the one grandparent that is coming is planning on bringing an electric scooter....while she is agile and walked almost the entrie yard last August, the heat and humidity were tough and I think this will make her day a bit more manageable (at least that is my hope)...she is agreeable to the idea, but I will suggest she "stay put"...don't think I'll get very far with that...knowing her, there will be no keeping her away I'm afraid. Will take everyone's advice about packing lots of water, and the hotel is within an easy reach for a break in the pool or A/C if it becomes too much.

On a positive note, the one advantage is that he will not have to make lots of telephone calls while on Stribling as everyone will already be there....and while the day sounds like it will be very tough and even more emotional from what everyone has said, at least this bunch promises to keep us all laughing!

As for changing the family visit to PW, I am embarrassed to say that they are all coming to that as well- and rooms are already booked...and they all consider themselves to be "immediate" members! :( (really, we are blessed! :) )

candidate mom- yes, in a funny way having this "advanced notice" has been an advantage....and i think bill0510 said quite awhile ago ( if I recall correctly) that sometimes you just have to take advantage of the advantages you get! As for a nomination, he will need another one for this year (unlike at NAPS)- but both the congressman and senator who gave him a nom this time last year were very encouraging - both are carrying his application forward with just a brief update to his file. Should for some reason he not receive a nom, however, the foundation program assured us they would assist in the process as he has a seat for 2010....so I am being pragmatic in trusting the system, and we have placed our son in the hands of the folks at the foundation.

More than the nom, and maintaining excellent grades this year, I am more worried about unforeseen injuries from sports....he is 3-varsity athlete, and a serious injury could change everything. His main sport comes in the spring, and he is not a kid who will hold back anything on the field- so that will be a hurdle to get over....so lots of prayers continue. I have no doubts Navy Lax will be a lot tougher!

Thanks again eveyone- your suggestions have not been in vain! Will pass everything along-

I'm currently a midshipman at the University of Washington battalion. I'm on the NROTC sail team, and also working on the sail qualification required of scholarship students. Now, for the scholarship, I need to take the Skipper B sail qual, which is part of a civilian based track. The CO of the team said that all team members go by the Academy's qualification track beginning with Senior Crew qualification, allowing team members to bypass the Skipper B qual.

Do any Academy mids know if...eh...when I get to the Academy next, will I be able to transfer this qualification, or will I have to do it over?

you might be able to transfer the qualification, but if not it doesnt really matter because qualifying again would not be hard, especially since you've had experience. no matter what you would still sail and you'll enjoy it because its a relaxing break from the cadre.
