I have a 3.8uw when all of my classes are factored in (I'm kind of indignant that I have it taken away from me). What colleges will butcher the GPA in the hated re-calculation?

I dont' see how they could butcher your GPA to become very low (a 3.8 UW is high). At any rate, what is your class rank? That is an important indicator.

Some people wanted to see my stats so I bumped this. There really shouldn't be a big fuss because my stats are not that good. As I've highlighted in this thread, I got into my choices because I "gamed" the system and wrote great essays focusing on each school. Basically I "Early Decisioned" to each school without actually doing it (if you want to think of it that way).

If anyone has any questions concerning colleges I'd probably be able to help answer them too. :)

i am enamored by acceptedalready's stats.... :)

I have a silly question... it's obviously too late already to change anything, as my application was sent, but if all my SAT scores were in the 700s (710, 720, 720), and one of my SAT II's was 730 (ushist), but the other was only a 650 (spanish) is that really going to hurt me? I've gotten all A's in AP spanish for 4 years.. shouldn't that "make up" for it?

PS: I'm an undecided major as of yet.

There is a chance that colleges may think your Spanish classes are easy if you can't break 700 on the Spanish SAT II but it is such a minute part of your application that I would not break a sweat about it. Most schools just care about you taking foreign languages and doing well in other important things (such as English/Math/Science).

Good luck! :)

3.87 uw/4.78 w
1800 SAT
5/162
Minimal Honors classes available, no AP's offered.
I took 2 AP classes on a virtual school, and took 30+ community college credits. State accomplished musician and tennis player. I applied to Penn-Wharton ED and was deferred, My school is very rural and no one from the school has ever gone to an Ivy. Best is WUSTL. We have a 22% rate of students going on to a 4 year Univ.

I emphasized in my essays I did the best with what I had and showed my drive to be the best. How do you think i did overall with my app positioning?

well at a lot of colleges you get credit with at least a 640 on your spanish SAT II. I think that native speakers taking it screw up the curve

AcceptedAlready, what should one do if placed on a waitlist? Excuse me...not one waitlist, but three...all three of that someone's top choices.

if you're chinese and you take the chinese SAT II language test, and get, say, an 800, do colleges look down on that? i hope they would cuz that's just trying to pad your resume with 800's... but i've seen some people just doing it "for an easy 800..."

Anonymous99: Send in a personal essay, 2 recs (one academic, one non), and get an unofficial update of your grades if they have improved.

Aspariguy: No. They do not look down on that. However you shouldn't take two languages or "soft sciences". You should follow up your Chinese SAT II with something in the sciences like Physics or if you do well on the math portion then that will work too.

aspariguy, that would not be a bad idea at all. Many colleges require a foreign language for graduation, so getting an 800 on the SAT II might allow you to test out of that requirement. Cheating the system, perhaps, but it gives you more curriculum flexibility.

AcceptedAlready, you never answered what to do if you have a high GPA/low sat!

I read the entire thread and didn't find an answer . . . care to elaborate?

Also, thanks for the essay tips, I think they will genuinely help. I too have Harry Bauld's essay book, but it's not read yet, I'll read it in the next couple of days . . . and I might go and check out chicken soup from the library now :)

Hmm I thought I addressed that one. What I would personally do is to write about my focuses in school and in E.C.'s. That way, you send the indirect signal that you aren't one of those kids that got a prep program and studied his butt off for the SATs. Highlight the STRENGTHS of your application and not the weaknesses.

Many people try to address the fact DIRECTLY which is a mistake. You don't want to come out and say something like "Oh yea I've never been good at taking tests." What do you think college is about? Right.. its about mostly 3 BIG exams/tests that determine most of your grade.

Focus on your academics and your E.C.'s and how "busy" you are. The more busy you make yourself look, the less attention will be focused on your SATs.

Hope I helped!

^^I think it's important to come straight out and say that you know that your SAT scores are low. It's obvious that the college will found out that they're low, and the adcoms will definately look for an explanation to why they're low. If the applicant simply ignores the scores, he's just leaving room to be shot down by the college. Rather, by acknowledging the low score, you show modesty and are able to turn the reader onto something more important. Example: I know my scores are low, but I'm extremely dedicated to my ECs which I've always felt are more important than a 4 hour test.

Try demonstrating interest in the college. That's a big one. Big, big one.

hey acceptedalready, im already loving this thread.

anyway my stats are here : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=106751&highlight=thegame2388

1) based on my stats and a hypothetical SAT of above 1900+, what do you think my chances are at UCLA/UCSD?

2) i am EXTREMELY interested in politics (although i dont want to major in that); i am president and founder of the young democrats club but the problem is that we've only had 2 meetings and both of them were in september. ever since, we havent done a SINGLE thing (not even meetings). how should i address this? i want to convey my STRONG political interests without bring this fact up, how would i do this?

3) i want to become a dentist/orthodontist in the long run, would u recommened majoring in pre-dentistry studies (UCLA and UCSD dont have that) or something like chemistry?

AA - Why didn't you apply to harvard?

now eveyrone wants to go to harvard...if i could get it, i wouldnt apply to harvard anyway :p

i do have a question for you AA. Do you think schools really dont care as much about freshman grades? Ive heard mixed opinions. This is something like what my grades look like:
Freshman year (Clearly some lackluster grades here!):
Hon Debate: A-
Geometry: A
Hon English 1: B+
Spanish 2: B
Gym/Health (3:1): A- / C
Hon. Bio: B-
World History: A-
Programming in BASIC (half year): B

Sophomore year:
Hon Mastering Excel (half year): A+
Personal Finance (half year): A+
Hon English 2: A-
Spanish 3: A
Hon Robotics: A+
Algebra 2" A+
Gym/Health (3:1): A/A+
Hon Chem: A-
AP US Hist: A

Junior year (estimated final grades based on now):
AP Physics B: B+
Gym/Health (3:1): A+/A+
Sociology of Vietnam (half year): A
Entreprenership (half yaer): A+
Precalc: A+
AP Euro Hist: B+
Hon English 3: B+
Spanish 4: A
Hon Government (half year): B+
Hon Contemporary History: (half year): A-

Senior year courses:
AP Chem
AP English
AP Stat
AP Calc AB
AP Art Hist
Spanish 5
Hon Business

ok so those are my grades. clearly i had a terrible freshman year and then what i consider to be pretty good soph and junior years, as well as hoping for a good senior year. Will this be taken into consideration? Because of my freshman year, my unweighted gpa is 3.7 and weighted is only 3.98. I really want to get into some top schools. I also have mediocre ECs, but have a current SAT of 2110 and hopefully will be bumping that up. so my question is how much schools with consider my freshman grades?

Native speakers do not "screw up" the curve...I've been told that when curves are made, (for the SAT II and the APs) CB creates his curve based on the non-native speakers...so yeah..and for the record, this is coming from someone that is taking both AP French Lang. as a non-native and AP Spanish Lang. as a native...so yea
