I'm a highschool Junior, lost in what I should major in College

So I’m a highschool Junior, & everyone in my class knows what they are going to do in college. However, I am extremely lost in wgat I want to do. I love a little bit of everything & the world just offers me sooo much. Thats why I can’t choose! I want a job that will help me be economically well in the future. I also want it to be a job that I can enjoy. Any suggestions or help you guys can give would really help!

Concentrate on graduating high school and enjoying it. You don’t really need a major until after you start college. Many people don’t end up working their whole career in the field they majored in. No reason to worry about it now.

oh, honey.

No, not “everyone” knows what they are going to do in college: they know what they think they will be doing. On average at least 1/3 of students end up doing something completely different than the major they think that will when they apply to college.

And the great thing is that, except for a few subjects (architecture, engineering, sometimes CS), for most colleges you don’t declare a major until well into your second year. So, you have nearly 3 years- and a year of college- before you have to name a choice (and even then you can do double- & hybrid- majors).

So, use this time to explore different options, and learn more about you, your strengths and weaknesses, the kinds of environments in which you thrive (and those where you don’t), etc. Follow your true interests, and you will find your path. You have the gift of time.

It is possible to start college with an undeclared major and spend up to two more years after high school trying to figure that out.

You do not need to declare a major for a very long time from now. Just enjoy high school. In three years, you can come back and ask, if you are still worried.

If you are looking strictly at the economics and money aspect, the highest salaries out of a 4-year school will be in Computer Science, any number of Engineering fields, and depending on area and school, Nursing and Economics. Anything that uses a lot of math such as Accounting and Statistics would be decent as well. Data Science might also be a good choice - it is a relatively new major at a lot of places that is a combination of a lot of things - computer science, statistics, machine learning, and other traditional fields, which is fast becoming very popular.

Even though other posters have alluded to the fact that you don’t have to worry about declaring so soon, which is technically correct, you do want to have some idea, if only to narrow down or filter college choices.

Other posters have addressed how you do have time to figure it out and you don’t have to worry so much right now!! For colleges, you can apply as undecided or any major you think you might want to try. Anyway, you’re not yet in the midst of college applications so you have time.

I was pretty much in your same shoes. Even when I went to college, people judged me and lowkey shamed me for not knowing exactly what I wanted to do. How could I know when I wasn’t sure of all the possibilities out there and if I liked them? It’s a totally normal thing to not know and it’s okay.

What I do suggest doing is that-- you use your time in highschool to try and explore different areas. You don’t necessarily need to take a class to start exploring stuff. Look at a list of college majors and just start looking at the future job opportunities- what they do. You can watch “Day in the Life of _____” videos sometimes on youtube. This will help you get a better picture and help figure out if that’s what you see yourself doing- does it appeal? Also, just independently watching lectures for classes in different fields can help too.

And well, what subjects have you taken in school that you enjoy? This can help serve as a starting point.
