Well, I have heard some VERY grim tales about cornell's social scene. I got a likely, but I am seriously considering DUke or Dartmouth too. Like, I hear all everyone wants to do is study and that there is NOTHING to do in ITHACA. I also hear that Cornell has a VERY high suicide rate and everyone is just concerned with grades. Tell me about this...

PS: Are the professors helpful and willing to help u out of class?

Cornell probably has the best social scene in the ivy league. there is tons of things to do on campus, and ithaca is definitely more thriving than hanover. Cornell's suicide rate is actually lower than the national average. the only reason why cornell does have that reputation is because when someone does commit suicide it makes it in the news because they jump off the bridges into the gorges (instead of just dying in a room or something boring, you know)

Ithaca has a ton to do... and if not in the town, then on campus thre is always something to do. If you don't have fun at cornell, it's your own fault, so don't believe people who tell you that you can't have fun in ithaca

lets just say i had a summer job application due last friday...i needed a couple of letter of reccomendations (which i didn't know about until friday) I asked 3 of my professors (that day!) to write a letter for me. They all sent their LOR through FAX (I was worried about it not getting there in time, and one of them suggested FAX) and voila, by 6PM, all of my LOR was sent. My professors are sent from heaven.

cornell's suicide rate is equal to if not lower than everybody. it's just has a lot more publicity after all, jumping a bridge is so much more exciting than overdosing on pills don't you think so? the media would much rather report the former than the latter.

do the research, i really don't want anyone coming who's not excited about coming. a lot of more deserving people (like nicky) should.

No offense, but you sound like a newbie who just landed on the boards and hasnt really discussed cornell too much previously, because in that post you took the three most widely-spread and blatantly false negative statements about cornell and strung them together. These three topics have been beaten to death all up and down the boards, and the fact of the matter is that those statements simply arent true. Just read what people have been saying on these boards. I can tell you firsthand that none of this is the case.

I'm slightly disturbed by the fact that you have applied to Cornell but are still unenlightened about these issues (these topics are normally discussed when someone first starts thinking about cornell, in my experience). If you are still unaware about topics such as these, I would seriously try to get some more information about the school rather than make an uninformed decision based on hearsay, urban legends, and lies. And i'm not even being sarcastic. I'd just really hate to see someone make an uninformed decision.

I fear that I'm going to be interpreted as being a jerk through this post, and I beg your forgiveness. As a proud Cornellian, I get a little defensive when someone talks smack about my school, that's all. However, I like to take action when I see something wrong. So, if you need any information about any aspect of life at Cornell, I'd be happy to give you my input, as would the many other incoming and current cornell students on this board.

Let's just settle this once and for all instead of perpetuating myths:

"All everyone wants to do is study"-no, people don't WANT to study but yes Cornell does hold its students to a certain standard and you will have to do work

"There's nothing to do in Ithaca"-true

Cornell's social scene is just fine though. There is plenty to do on campus-frat parties, bowling allies, gym, movie theaters, seminars, etc. whatever you want

90% of the professors I've met have been extremely helpful; I think I've met 2 so far who haven't been as accessible but you'll run into professors like them at any school

suicide rate-myth; Cornell's suicide rate is below the national average

Who was "attacking" "your" school? lol I have never been to NY and I was just posing a serious question? And wow....yousaid I dont deserve to go here and that I have not done my hw, right? How the hell would I research this? Is this board not the perfect place to ask such questions? No, I am NOT offended by your comments, but I am relieved Cornell students are friendly like those at Dartmouth. However, I went to studentsreview.com and they seem to say the exact opposite of what you guys are posting. So, I am a bit confused.

PS: I apologize if my post was offensive, I just want to make the RIGHT choice for where I'm gonna be for the next 4 years of my life

Thank you norcalguy!!!!!

OK PEOPLE. THAT IS IT.

What he just posted is to be taken as GOSPEL, ok? It's really, really true! From now on anyone who asks about these topics will be referred to norcalguy's post. Then they will be SHOT (jk...sorta).

so I suppose I should consider myself writhed in bullets then lol

First off, perro's post was just a reflection of what most of us were probably thinking. Second, people who would post at studentsreview.com either really love the school or have some personal problem with it; the average student tends NOT to visit sites like those.

DMC: Don't sweat it. Cornellians tend to be sensitive after hearing the same stereotypes over and over again: high suicide rate, lots of work, cutthroat, etc. (notice none of them are ever positive).

You can choose to believe them or you can listen to what actual Cornell students have to say (like me or Perro). Admittedly, there are some people who can't handle the work or are unhappy here. But there's also the other side of the coin. For the most part, the students here are very happy. And the sucide rate myth is dispelled by statistics. You don't have to take our word for it.

NO TOWERRR!!!!!! NO DEVIL!!! NOOOO!!!!!!!

Delete those posts while you can!!!!! We already lost sparticus, not y'all too!!!

Lol, i dunno if they will bust you just for mentioning another site or not but i'd sure be careful.

Aside from that, yeah, I wasnt being an ******* or anything, but i just thought that most ppl who liked a school enough to apply to it would have researched enough to get through all the myths and other bullcrap that isnt true. I was kinda taken aback that you didnt know, and, like quyhn said, (and as ive said a lot before) "i really don't want anyone coming who's not excited about coming".

As for reputable information, I would consult the numerous books out there where colleges are reviewed, as well as, yes, this board. But nothing can really replace a campus visit. Where do you live? Unless its wayyyyy far away i'd really try to make it to ithaca and get a feel for the place, because nothing can substitute for just going there and seeing in yourself.

No, I DO take ur word for it. Man, I have to decide by April 3 and I simply cannot.

I actually just went over to the "aforementioned site" (it's spring break, I'm stuck in Ithaca and everything is closed; if you wanna talk about suicide, this is suicide:) and the ratings that the students gave Cornell are a lot higher than Duke and certainly Dartmouth so even if you go by that site, Cornell still wins!

Have you even visited the campus? That's the only way to really get a feel for the social or academic scene. After one visit I knew I'd fit right in, and it was as simple as that. I realize the choice is more complex for some people, but if you haven't already seen Cornell, my first suggestion is to get a feel for it by visiting firsthand. We're really not going to be able to help you make such a decision here. You're going to get a mere 20 personal opinions.

Norcalguy, go to the rankings for the TOP IVY in that site. Dartmouth is ranked number 1 and Cornell is like 4th. Also, go to the rankings for the student picked top school. Dartmouth is uno.

PS: I have a question. How are the dorms at Cornell. Are they like palaces like Yale or what?

i think most people end up loving where they go. that being said, i say follow the money. where you can get out with the least amount of debt will make college a little less stressful.

cornell dorming is such that distinguished guests can stay in them. i don't know if yale can say the same.

WOW! The dorms at Duke are a lot messier.

DMC: That ranking (or any ranking) doesn't tell you much. If you're going to use that site, you might as well go on each school's individual page and look at what the students gave for educational quality, social life, etc. etc. Based on that site alone, it seems that Cornell students are a lot more happy with their school.

Oh, **** I didn't realize that I actually posted the site name....oh well didn't link it hehe (and yes, I know, this is very late)
