I'm getting excited...

Groton's web site states.... non-aide 30% accept aide 20% accept

Wow...that much of a difference? ahh...

prepparent, do you really think I'm that qualified? I've read a lot of the chances threads on this board and they seem much more qualified than me, although most of them are from the NY/New England Area, I don't think that being from Michigan will be that important to the schools.

JK, I think you are as good as any. The key is choosing the right school for you. Come on! you're fine. Imho, Michigan does give you a bit of a hook. Most students are from the east coast and NE. You are from the mid-west.

Go ahead and apply for FA. You can also investigate bs that offer Merit Scholarships. I imagine that these are very difficult to get and probably require more work on your part, but they are available. You would have to look at schools that are not on your list. Boarding school review has a line item for merit aid under financial information.

JK, which of your parents thought that your Japan trip was worth the money? This is probably the parent who would be open to bs/$. Maybe you "wheel and deal", give up something that translates to savings for the parents. Time to get creative. "where there a will there's a way"

this is a bit off the subject. I think when we get closer to the whole prep school process, we are going to need as much info on such things as interview questions, travel issues, what to wear, etc. I believe this stuff would be very helpful for this years prep crew.

With regards to the all-girls schools, if would be nice if we can have an area dedicated this subject. Of course we will need the input from current, past, and prospective students.

Give up something like what? I don't have any thing that costs a lot of money besides a house and food. My sister has a horse, and if I had one, I would give it up to go to boarding school, although it didn't cost nearly as much as it would to go to boarding school.

I briefly brought up the subject of taking out a loan to my mom. I said that maybe my dad could pay her back in a few years or so, in installments. She didn't really seem objected to it at all. She's just like.. well why don't we do that?

So I guess I'll give her the info about Prepgate. Does anyone know of similar loan companies like prepgate? (Or whatever they're called)

Jonathan: I told you before, the surest way not to get in is not to apply. The schools make their admission decisions on a need blind basis and then admit as many qualified FA applicants as they have money for. So in the worst case you will get waitlisted at one or two schools. Big deal. Your job right now is to put yourself high enough up the FA applicant list to make the cut. You do this by expressing a keen interest in those things that the school is about and by demonstrating that you can contribute to the school's strength in that area. Also, your fallback school, Ashbury is quite good even by St. Paul's standards. In other words, your life is not over if you get FA waitlisted at Andover, they will probably let you in the next year if you are still interested. Make the strongest application you can at the schools where for the right reasons you really want to go and forget about it. You probably will be pleasantly suprised.

I really wanted to take a course online this summer, but it's $350. :(

Do you guys know of any websites that let eighth graders take courses online?

I wasn't nearly as excited when I applied for high schools...I wonder what they're feeding middle school kids these days.

JK, give up things like $350 online courses. Just a thought

I think we're going to apply for financial aid now, but I really don't want to do that. I don't think I have that great of a chance, anyway, let alone with financial aid.

prepparent, do you know of any more statistics like that from schools like Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, and Choate? (how many get in that apply for fin. aid).

prepparent, I actually didn't end up taking an online course. It was too much money.

How much do you think the admissions officers would care that I'm self studying Modern Greek for about an hour each day?

Jk, studying Greek on your own definitely shows initiative. I do not know stats. I do know that Choate, and Exeter are not need blind. I believe Deerfield is need blind.

Is Andover need blind?

I just really don't want financial aid to affect their decision by TEN PERCENT. That's a lot...

Jonathan, keep in mind that admittance is not always directly realted to financial aid. I applied last year for my first year at Andover and applied for financial aid. I didn't get any aid, but I still got in. We reapplied this year for aid, and we got a very generous amount.
Andover isn't need blind, but they are working on it. Over 40% of kids receive some sort of financial aid.

Thank you.

JK, maybe you need to check yourself. Fretting over financial aide is not going to change whether you will need it or not. Spending needless energy that can be spent on other productive things is the way to go. Good Luck!

Hey JK, are you around?

Yes, I am. Why?
