(i posted this in another forum but i dont think people would see it there so i posted it in this one 2)
I want to apply to Andover and Exeter (maybe both, i haven't decided) Is one harder to get into than the other? And how is the financial aid? What do i have to get on me SAT's? Which one do you like better? I have been honor role all year through 6th and 7th grade and i have gotten straight A's through both years except one B in math at the end of 7th. I got a duke TIP award(dont really know what that is or if it helps) Im going into eighth and i have to go to public school but i have gone to private all my life. Please tell me if you think i could get in and ask if you need for info

more info*

I think you have a pretty good chance of getting in but you should have some community service, athletics, and remember to prepare for the SSAT. I am also applying for the same 2 schools.

I’d recommend applying to more than just Andover and Exeter if you want to go to boarding school; both those schools are extremely competitive, and even if you have the best stats in the world, you still may not get in.

If you ONLY want to go to Andover and Exeter and don’t aplly anywhere else, but want to continue at a private school, I suggest you look in to day school in your area for a back up.

well i have been dancing for 7 years and i play tennis and i cant go back to my private school. but anyway i really want to go to boarding school. and what do i do fro community service because im starting my first ever year of public school(8th grade) and i have no idea what i could do for community service. idk if this counts: i am an assistant teacher for a fitness class so i teach the class with someone else BUt i dont get paid and iv been doing it for about 2 years. does that count? what else could i do?

on my SAT this this i was in the 90th percentile for almost every subject. so if i apply i would really prepare well…any suggestions on prep books? and also the interview how does that work? thanks!

there is another thread about interviews that would be useful for you. for community service, you could join a club at your new school or find places around your town. maybe a library or a church/ temple? research things you can do.

Community service is not based in any way on your school. There are tons of opportunities for volunteering out there. You could volunteer at your local soup kitchen, help mentally challenged kids play sports, join a program that plants trees and pick up trash, or, if you cannot find anything that fits you in your hometown, you could always try looking up an organization online that fits your interest and bring it to your city. (just make sure to check age requirements, some city run organization require you to be a certain age or older.)

i guess i could voulenteer at my local library and my new school may have a program for mentally challenged kids. is the amount of community service really important? and would my assistant teacher for a fitness class at a community gym(mostly older people) count toward community service

if you are getting paid. no. That is not community service coming from your heart. That’s a job. I don’t know how much schools look into for community service, but you should definately have at least a little.

no i am not getting paid but the person that teaches with me is. But i am assisting for free. would that count?

I’m not sure. I think it might but it might not be what the schools are looking for. It depends.

okay thank you! i will most likely volunteer at the library but its so hard because i am only in 8th grade and there aren’t THAT many options

sure there are. You just have to look harder for them. But I am sure you will do fine. They aren’t looking for people you started volunteering a ton right before they applied to boarding school.

are you in boarding school? if you are which one? I really want to get into Andover

nah. I am applying, but i am pretty much crazy bout community service, plus i have been reading around a bit. and i will be applying to Andover but I really hope to get into exeter, even though I would be more then willing to attend Andover.

well you seem to know a lot. if i have questions about the interview/admissions stuff, do you know where i would find a thread on that?

You can go to the “Interview” thread or the “Applications to BS” thread (created by me)

okay thank you

being a dancer/studying dance and volunteering in a dance/exercise program combined with stellar grades and above 85th% ssat sounds like a great package. Remember, the essays you write are just as important as your volunteering. No way apply just to two schools, especially if you are looking for a scholarship. Make sure you have 6/8 schools that you like. In terms of which schools – you should read through past threads and study the schools’ web sites
