I'm technically Chinese, but I'm from South Africa. Am I African American (URM)?

I was born in South Africa, and left the homeland to the U.S. when I was six. My childhood was in South Africa, but I ended up becoming a citizen in the U.S. My parents are Chinese, but since I grew up in South Africa, can I confidentially say to friends and admission officers that I am African American?

Inb4 mass of AA ********.

No, African African is a racial label, whereas your heritage is merely African in an ethnic sense.

Your Asian, that is your race. You being African-American is just an ethnicity.

Nope, you’re just gonna have to try hard in school like the rest of us asians.

Nope. Nice try, though.

I suspect a ■■■■■.

I know a chick from South Africa, she is white.

Lawl, aren’t there millions of whites in South Africa?

[You’re whatever you consider yourself to be.](<a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa_under_apartheid"]You’re”>Apartheid - Wikipedia)

Link is obviously irrelevant.

A friend of mine told me a story of a white South African who moved to the U.S. and received citizenship. Some time afterward he applied to colleges where he listed himself as African American on the application. According to my friend he was kicked out once the school he accepted realized he had lied, but then he successfully sued the school. Apparently he won, but of course this is all just hearsay.

^ Lol. I’d like to read that news article if it’s out there.

Lol I have a white friend and she was born in Africa also… but she’s so white she can’t say she’s AA. :(

@ toxic: African-American is not an ethnicity. If Invisible was born in S. Africa, that means he has African nationality. He can’t be ethnic African if he’s Asian.

According to Wikipedia, that’s what an African-American is. According to this, you aren’t an African-American because you don’t have origins in any of the black populations in Africa.

On a side note, here’s the definition of Hispanic according to Wikipedia:

[Hispanic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Hispanic - Wikipedia)

According to this, I could be considered Hispanic because I’m part Spanish. However, I don’t label myself as “Hispanic.”

They just say “African American” because they think it’s more politically correct than “Black.” They mean black. You are not black.

Why are you ■■■■■■■■???

I’d really love to you to find evidence of that case. I highly doubt a school would kick him out because he was from South Africa.

Born in South Africa => African
US citizenship => American

Yes, you are African American.

Born here –> Native
US citizenship –> American

I’m apparently a Native American.
