Impact of a bad first semester

I am currently at a top USNEWS school and have completely nuked my first semester with C-'s.

I am considering medical school. I understand that the first semester is a time for freshman to ‘get used’ to college but that there are also undergraduates applying to medical school with already 4.0’s in their freshman year. I am just looking to know if its worth retaking C or C-'s on Pre-Med requirements such as Math/Chem/Bios and etc or to just take upper level courses and do very well in them.

My school’s policy is that all courses are allowed for retake however, only first attempts are averaged out into my GPA. Later attempts will appear as ‘footnotes’ and are not part of my GPA.

I have done well enough to not require a retake for my major.

I understand the concepts of these classes very well, as my final exam scores show, but I did not during the first few weeks due to unpreparedness. I am fairly confident with next semester as I know exactly what was done wrong and led to such bad markings.

My plan B is Graduate School in Neuroscience. Knowing that Medical School has only become increasingly more competitive, I’d be just fine doing research.
