There are jobs that require ABET accredited degree, especially government, defense, and utilities etc. However there are lots of jobs that do not mention ABET. In fact, if you search indeed.com for “engineer” vs “engineer ABET”, a vast majority of jobs do not mention ABET accreditation. Do employers make a distinction even when they don’t mention ABET in the ad? That’s certainly possible.
I just did mechanical engineer - and these popped - i took some big names and not.
my son is doing auto, aviation/defense, etc and chemicals - more so they are finding him (the chemicals).
Just going by what he states.
I’ve seen it but don’t really look for it - because he has it (abet).
Not really sure what the employer gets out of it per se - but I assume a standard.
Two of my kids are engineers and ABET accreditation is important for many companies because it is a known standard. My daughter was very interested in Washington and Lee but ultimately decided that ABET accreditation was too important so passed. Neither of my kids got their PE, and for the mechanical engineering jobs they looked at PE certification was not necessary.
From my class 30 years ago, PEs are important for engineers who provide services (civil) and not as much for people who design products. It’s a difference in the law if you get sued. Tort vs something that I’m not remembering at 4am. Product liability maybe?
I didn’t intend to ghost the thread. I couldn’t talk to my sister last night because we had family visiting. I will try later today.
