Importance of AP Lit?

So right now, I'm a junior going into senior year in the fall, and I would really like to drop AP Lit into a class called "Honors College English". I prefer the teacher in this class and the material isn't overly time-consuming. I'm going to be doing a lot of research in the fall, so it's important that I have time for stuff like that rather than wasting it all on English when I plan on being an engineering major anyways. I've taken:

AP Euro, AP Stat = Soph
AP Calc BC, AP Phys B, AP Lang & Comp, APUSH, AP Comp Sci A = Junior
[AP Lit], AP Gov, AP Econ, AP Phys C, AP Chem, AP Comp Sci AB (material, but no AP) = Senior

Will it really matter that much if I drop AP Lit --> H Coll Eng?

My counselor says that it'll look bad if I took an AP English in 11th, but then drop down in 12th. If it matters, I'll have an overall average of 93 in AP Lang & Comp.

I found AP Lit pretty obnoxious because of all the reading. The exam was probably the easiest exam I had ever taken (easier than AP Lang), though it has a tough curve on it.

If you’re a STEM major and have all those APs already, forget AP Lit. There’s no reason to take it in my opinion. I don’t think your counselor is correct anyway. It won’t look “bad.”

The only issue is your counselor gets to determine how rigorous your schedule is for college applications. You want to make sure she checks “Most rigorous.” Hopefully dropping AP Lit won’t change her mind in light of all your other APs.

Ah, I guess you’re right. I mean, if I’ve taken so many AP’s already, and not taking Lit would have her not check “Most Rigorous”, then I really don’t wanna take that risk. I’m still debating on it though. Is the class itself harder than AP Lang & Comp?

Your school counselors should have a defined amount of AP and/or other advanced classes that are needed for them to check the “most rigorous” box. This should be evenly and fairly applied to all students at your school. Just ask her what the school’s criteria is for that check mark, and you’ll know. It looks like you’ll have 11-12 AP’s w/o the Lit, which at most schools would certainly be enough.

How difficult the class is depends on your teacher. Usually involves reading a lot of Shakespeare and other dreadful authors though.

Check the colleges you are interested in to see whether they have different placement policies for AP English language versus literature.

Some counselors are said to determine “most rigorous” opaquely or holistically.

My DS also has no interest in AP Lit for senior year. His GC was really pushing it. Said he needs 3 APs, but he refuses. Of course - he’s a math/science kid. He’s taking AP Calc, AP Physics C and AP Chem. Next year, he’s going to take an honors course in English (mythology). He’d much rather focus on the subjects he likes. Talked to his AP Lang teacher this week and he thought this was a good idea.

Having said this, you probably need to consider the colleges you want to apply to. They may have a different perspective, but for my son’s aspirations, this is going to be fine.
