Importance of College Visits

I havn't visited two of the selective colleges I applied to. Do I need to visit to have a chance to be accepted. Can I still do this?

Google the Common Data Set for each of the colleges and look at the section on what factors they consider in their admissions decisions. If “Demonstrated Interest” shows up as an important factor, then you may want to consider a visit if it is practical. If not, don’t stress over it.

If you live within a reasonable driving distance of the campus and don’t make an effort to make an official pre-registered on-site visit, that may not look good. If you live far away that is understandable. I don’t think it matters what month you visit, but I would try to visit by February if practical.

Some colleges carefully log into their system every visit, every email to admissions, etc. They want evidence of interest in the school vs. just being one of 10 applications that you submitted without thinking much about it. Some schools only want to accept students who they feel are likely to accept an offer (the yield).

One college actually puts some of their very best applicants on a waiting list (unless they show strong interest) because they feel they are being used as a safety.
