Hi. I am the president of a fairly large club at my school (over 100 students). How important will this be in my admission process? I have also been an officer in several other clubs.
It shows leadership, which colleges look for. But note that just the leadership title does not automatically imply his/her abilities. Make sure you commit extra time and actually be passionate about your pursuits.
I think the actual title is far less important than the letter of recommendation you’ll be able to get from teachers, who can rave about your leadership abilities.
It’s another EC - there are 30,000+ high schools each with a dozen or more clubs and each one of those clubs has a president. You do the math. It’s great that you are learning new skills as a leader. Schools like to see that people are engaged in their communities and stretching themselves. But if you want ‘extra credit’ you will need to explain what you have accomplished and what you have learned. Just the title ‘president’ and a club is not by itself especially important.
A lot will also depend on where you are applying, and what this particular club is all about.
If you are the President of a club that doesn’t do anything (say, a chess club that never meets to play chess - not picking on chess, just using it as an example), it won’t look as impressive as President of a Community Service Group that organizes dozens of events all year long, each with chairs / subcommittees, etc. , where you clearly spend hundreds of hours because you are good at it, and you love it.
I think it matters what you do as president. As an alumni interviewer, I would ask what types of things you did while President. Did you organize a fundraising effort that brought in 20% more money than last year? Did you increase the number of members of your club:?
Thank you for the valuable feedback!
The “Leadership” or “Officer” whore isn’t an unknown persona when it comes to college applications. You probably noticed how many people were fighting for the role so they can puff up their resume? You don’t think that’s common?
The best you can hope for is that you enjoyed what you’re leading and are properly handing off the org to the next officers.
