I was just curios as to how colleges value research conducted by a student. I mean, if I was to perform some genuine research and develop or come across something novel, does that make a great impact on my college application?

It’s tough to accurately assess what sort of research will impress a college. In hs, you aren’t fully trained for the depth and breadth- or even a critical self-assesment of your progress. You don’t usually know what the range of approaches or intellectual trends are- or what they scoff at. It can be better to have real life experience alongside the pro’s and grad students. Even if it’s low level.
