Your departmental ranking is more important for admission to top PhD programs. Schools like Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, UCSB, and Stony Brook all have top ranked physics and science programs despite their lower rankings overall.</p>

<p>And if you are already in a school with a top 10 program in your field, you have an inherent advantage of being admitted to a top PhD program.</p>
