My husband is moving to Raleigh this month for his job. This way, he can meet the residency and domicile requirements set by the state government.
I have decided to stay back in Ohio and let DD graduate before we move next year. We have asked several people at NC, including RDS and UNC, what they would consider DD’s status as when she applies to NC colleges.(she’ll apply with her dad’s address in NC) No one has been able to give us a specific answer. They know in state requirements for tuition and grant purposes, but no one apparently has ever asked them how a student would be categorized for admission! Has anyone been in this situation? Please advise.
DD has an ACT score of 33 (34 superscored), SAT of 1520, GPA 4.0U, 4.4W, rank 5 of 400 and lots of ECs. We know she has a better chance of getting in to UNC if she was considered in-state. Thanks in advance for your help!
Forgot to mention DD plans on applying EA at UNC this fall. She has taken 4 AP classes as a junior, scored 5 in 3 and 4 in 1 and is taking 5 AP classes as a senior.

http://registrar.sites.unc.edu/files/2012/06/Residence_Manual_Aug_2010.pdf
Pg 14, 1a:
“Divorced or Separated Parents. If the minor’s parents are divorced, legally separated, or otherwise living apart from each other, the minor’s domicile is that of the parent who is legally entitled to claim, and in fact does claim, the minor as a dependent child for North Carolina individual income tax purposes.29 To qualify under this provision, the parent claiming the minor as a dependent must also be a legal resident of North Carolina. The length of time the minor is deemed to be domiciled in North Carolina under this provision is the time period in which the parent claimed the minor as a dependent. For example, if the North Carolina resident parent claimed the minor as a dependent for 3 years, the minor is deemed to have been domiciled in North Carolina for 3 years.”
That manual is dated 2010 or 2011, so check the state education site for an updated one.
I would call the school and try to work your way up the food chain to get a firm answer.
You also need to find out if she is in-state for tuition purposes.
Thanks for the replies.
Both RDS and UNC have confirmed that DD will be considered OOS for admission purposes but if she gets in, she will be in-state for tuition purposes.
