Income from work for FAFSA / Profile?

I am confused. I understand "income from work" should be a "high" number because it is used to calculate money taken out for FICA tax. When filling out the forms I like it when they give the corresponding line item on the tax form so I can know I am reporting it correctly. However, line 7 on the 1040A "total wages, salaries, tips, etc." does not include the amount taken out for pre-tax retirement, right? The Profile is asking for "line 7" for total income from work. Should I put down what is on line 7 of our 1040A or what I get when I manually total up the amounts from W-2s?

And a related question: One of my husbands employers did not put the amount of his pre-tax retirement contribution in box 12 of the W-2. It is in box 14 and is noted as "retire." When doing turbo tax it doesn't get included in line 32 or from 8880. Any tax experts out there who can tell me why? (It doesn't show up anywhere on our tax return, but is on the W-2.)

Bump…
I’m updating the Profile after filing taxes. Anybody?..

Box 14 (Code A) of IRS Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) is included in income from work. If the box 14 to which you refer is from the W2, that is not reported as untaxed income in most cases. Is it from a non-voluntary contribution to pensions? That is not reported.

Normally, the amounts on your W2 will add up to the amount you reported on line 7. What is the difference, and why is there a difference?

Kelsmom, I sent you a PM

I just sent you a response. :)
