Income tax related: A Massachusetts student eared income form her out of sate school

I am asking a question for my daughter who is currently studying overseas. Hopefully it is not too late.

My daughter had two incomes last year. One is summer intern in Boston. The other is from her school in MO.

My question:
Does she need to report both incomes in MASS Form 1 and in MO-1040A?
OR
Report intern income in MASS Form 1 and school income in MO-1040A?

Thanks in advance for your advices.

Are you using tax software that includes state returns? It should ask questions about the income she received and where it was from.

Where do you live? I think if she is your dependent for federal taxes, she would still be considered as living with you at home, even if she is temporarily away at school.

Depending on the home state and non-resident state tax rules, she might have to report her total income on the home state tax return, and might have to report the MO and MA income as a non-resident, and then get a tax credit for the tax paid on the non-resident returns.

We had the same situation (different state) and TurboTax took care of everything.

What is her state of legal residence?

Massachusetts

I’m not a tax professional…

But when my kids were in college…

They complete a state tax return for the state of residence (ours) as residents…and then had to complete a state return for the state in which their college was located as a non-resident.

Their federal tax return was completed using our home state as their state of residence…because that was their permanent residence.

One year, one of my kids had earnings in four states,

Only our home state was his state of residence.

One state didn’t actually require him to file because he earned a very small amount, and he no deductions taken out.

We used Turbo Tax and it walked us through everything very quickly and easily.

In my experience, it’s the other way around. Complete a return first for the non-resident state (MO) using a non-resident return and reporting only the income earned in Missouri. Then do the resident return for Massachusetts, which will allow the taxpayer to take a credit for income tax paid to another jurisdiction.

TurboTax is your friend.

thank you all for the help. i know what to do now. thanks again.
