On the AAMC website, averages appear to hover around $150K-200K for debt.

How long on average does it take to pay off such debt?

Depends on a lot of factors: what kind of doctor are you going to be? Is it a relatively short residency or a residency with a fellowship? Do you plan on having a family, buying a car, house, etc. right after medical school? What’s your interest rates on your loans? The cost of living in your city that you plan on being in? Etc., etc. etc.

But if you were single, lived in a decent place, and made 150k-180k a year, you could probably have it paid off in 5 years and still save some money in the bank.

Ookla, do you have a cite for that? I thought it was around $120K for med school only.

Edit: average educational debt is $154K as of 2008 http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/about-ama/our-people/member-groups-sections/medical-student-section/advocacy-policy/medical-student-debt.shtml but that is for all educational debt. I’m still looking for med school only.
