Independent Study: Foreign Language?

Well, I've taken German for two years in high school, but the program is folding at my school do to a lack of interest. Is their any good way that I could hope to continue studying the language, or should I just switch to a new one? I’ve considered computer-based programs – are those any good? Community College classes could also be a possibility.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My advice: switch to a new one. I've tried self studying french due to a lack of available classes at my school and failed miserably. Without the teacher to motivate and classmates to share the experience with, it is extremely difficult to study a language by yourself. Also, I had so much stuff to do for my classes that by the time I was finished I couldn't care less about going through books solely. Maybe you will be able to do it, but I recommend starting with another language.

im not self studying french, but reading many french books and watching french movies definently helped me to inprove on my french. you could try dong that, but like mark said, it might be a little hard to do if you dont have a teacher to motivate you

It depends on how well you already know the language. If you understand a lot already, you could definitely do it. It will not work so well if you don't understand the language yet...I can speak spanish almost fluently, so I wanted to try to learn a new language. I chose French, and I gave up trying to learn it within a few days. It is really hard to learn it if you don't already know most of the basics. Hopefully after two years, you are at the point where it would be possible.

it all depends on how motivated you are. i took a year's worth of french correspondence from BYU and it took a lot to get myself to do it, but I got it done eventually. once you have the basic concepts of a language down, you can usually build upon more easily. just don't try to take a first year language on your own....

So if I already spoke Spanish, I could probably just take the test, eh?

that's like saying that since i'm fluent in englihs, i could probably ace the ap english tests

I'm self - studying Spanish now and it's going pretty well.
