Industrial and Systems Engineer (w/ IS)

How hard is ISE? Or ISIS, basically ISE with emphasis on Information Systems.

I'm pretty eh about math, just don't like it much. And I heard this program has the least amount of math. I know, I know, why be an engineer if you don't like math? I never planned to. However, I kept hearing that ISE is more business and management based, esp with the IS emphasis.

Any thoughts?

Industrial Engineering programs normally don’t require differential equations, other than that they take all the normal engineering math classes. They do use a lot of math, but from what I’ve read a lot of it is statistics and such.

As far as how hard it is, I have no idea! Any major can be hard if the school makes it hard. I’m interested in what other people have to say about this (I’m leaning toward ISyE).

My daughter is an ISE major and she had to take as many or more math classes as the other engineering majors.

She was required to take:

calculus and analytic geometry 1, 2, 3, 4
differential equations
linear algebra
probability and statistics for engineers 1, 2

She has also opted to take an additional statistics class as one of her technical electives.

At my school they are required to take the same math classes as everyone else. Its has ABET so there are certain requirements that have to be met. I can’t comment about how hard it is other than that allot of people say it is one of the easiest engineering majors. That does not mean it is easy though. It is often nick named “imaginary engineering” so you may here some of that.

If you like business and management get into a program like Industrial Management under Finance department. IS is more a lot more computer related (i.e networks, servers, data sets, etc.). Be sure of what you will really like to do when you get out.

Yes I’m also interested in computers and business management which is why I’m leanings towards ISIS.

I did hear about the ISE “easiness” and some call it " I suck at engineering "… lol. But how exactly is it easier? Some say many of the classes are more statistics but from what I’m seeing, the math classes are sort of the same.

Some people call IE’s “imaginary engineers” because they don’t really “build” things like the other more traditional engineering majors. Also, in upper division, there are no time-consuming labs like in mechanical, electrical, etc.
