Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering?

I'm interested in ultimately working in product design, either everyday consumer products like toys or appliances or something like that or medical prosthetic devices. Would it be best to pursue a degree in an engineering discipline like mechanical engineering or would it be better to do something like industrial design?

I think that is up to you. Are you a hardcore fan of calculus and physics? Or are you more concerned with the overall aesthetic look? You can definitely get into product design with both majors but drawing and design are going to play a larger part in your education as an industrial designer. Understanding how things work will play a larger part in a degree for mechanical engineering.

I do really like math and science so maybe engineering would be the right path for me, although I do really like drawing as well. My problem though is that I am currently a freshman at a college that doesn’t offer either of those majors. Would it be possible to get an undergraduate degree in a different related field and then go on to get a graduate degree?
