I have been accepted to the Georgia Tech Class of 2019 as a tentative Biomedical Engineering major. Although I’m still making a decision, I was wondering what Industrial Engineering is like as a field and as a major at Georgia Tech. It seems to be a major not offered at too many schools, but Tech is ranked #1 in it. I’m not just interested in the major because of its rank; in fact, I find it further intriguing because of the rank.
Based on some surface level research, Industrial Engineering seems to combine Math and Business with a Manufacturing (hence Engineering) focus. And it looks like Tech has sent graduates from its program to renowned companies such as Google, Apple, Intel, Coca-Cola, etc. So I’m wondering (preferably from current and past Georgia Tech students): What is Industrial Engineering like as a major at Georgia Tech? Moreover, what are job prospects in this field with just a Bachelor’s, Bachelor’s + Masters, and even beyond to a Ph.D?
Quite unlike biomedical, IE is perhaps the most versatile of all engineering majors. Job prospects (with just a bachelors) are vast, as the skill set is in demand by nearly every type of business. With GT having the best, and more importantly largest program (by far), the recruiting is amazing. The top companies in every industry, including high end consulting firms, love recruiting Tech IE’s. Would love some others to chime in, but I have yet to hear of any GT IE grads having difficulty finding jobs.
@Chardo Thanks for the input! I figured that IE’s are pretty versatile, but it is reassuring to know that there’s high demand for Tech IE’s. Additional input from other students (especially IE majors) would be greatly appreciated!
