Industrial Engineering vs Economics

So here I am again wondering if I should switch away from Econ in Umich. I'm a new transfer student and Industrial Engineering looks pretty intriguing to me. Anyone has any experience with this major? It seems to me that it opens up much more opportunities than Economics. I am not crazy about finance or anything like that and I would prefer Accounting over Economics any day but Umich doesn't have Accounting. I picked it over USC which has Accounting and so far, has been unsure if I had made the right choice. Maybe I'm freaking out but with the economy not doing so well and hearing so much job cutting in the news and the recent UBS withdrawal from the US market, Economics just doesn't feel like the right major anymore.

I only took 2 sciences in CC before transferring to Umich which are College Chemistry and Bio 101. I did take all 3 sciences for my O level which are comparable to the 1st semester college classes so I'm not completely science illiterate. Is it possible to transfer to the College of Engineering from LAS? And more importantly, how much sciences would Industrial Engineering have?

Sorry for the long post :( Really kind of lost here and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As a senior in IOE, I'd say IOE is more marketable than a degree in econ. With a degree in IOE, you can choose careers ranging from a really technical field like operations research to a general business position. Whereas with a business or econ degree, you're limited to general business type of jobs. But that's just MHO.

It's totally possible to transfer to CoE but they do have a certain GPA requirement (I'd say 3 or above). This page (Michigan Engineering | Industrial and Operations Engineering | Undergraduate) might answer many of your questions. GL!

Since we did we get rid of accounting?

sharkiez, umich does indeed have accounting. Try checking the Ross website

"Economics just doesn't feel like the right major anymore."

I personally believe now is the right time to major in Economics, companies are heavily seeking econ majors.
However, I do agree at some point with you that IOE will give you far greater number of career options.

Is accounting under the BBA in Ross? I can't find a BS or BA in accounting.

It's a BAcc, I think, with people staying an extra year for an MAcc--although I'm not 100% sure about that.

You can be an IOE major and still take some accounting courses like Principles of Accounting I & II(271/272), Intermediate Financial Accounting(312) and Cost Accounting(315).

And if you decide to do accounting when you graduate, you can go for the MAcc which will give you sufficient accounting training to sit for the CPA (you need 150 credits for the CPA anyway).

Look up the following thread for more details:

That brings the question: Is it worth to stay the extra year or so just to be an IOE major or should I just do Honors Econ with Math minor? Both paths are gonna kick my ass either way...Life in Mich is going to be stressed...
