Is Industrial Engineering a good major

It’s currently pretty good for jobs. 25,890 results on Indeed.com (job website) search. Also, 6% growth in jobs 2012 to 2014 indicated by comparison of http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_table_102.htm and http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_nat.htm#00-0000.

^ Those stats don’t even paint the whole picture. Industrial engineering is very broad and versatile. Many IE majors go on to jobs not titled Industrial Engineer. They are in management consulting, operations management, supply chain, health care management, logistics, etc. IE is all about efficiency, productivity, and profitability, so they are in demand by every industry.

IE is the only engineering major where you get to see which fast food chain has done their homework in production and which hasn’t  We have done the clipboard and stopwatch routine in a few and it was impressive to see the difference. You’ll also eternally wonder why the doctor’s office does not schedule better, about your power tool safety, your company’s efficiency, your wife’s or husband’s sequence of running errands, and so on.

The downside is not as many fun labs as, say, ME’s or EE’s but lots of fun projects, and a lot more probability and statistics classes. But after you spent a month dissecting random number generation algorithms, randomness will never look the same,

Conclusion: it’s an awesome major, and if you want hands-on you can follow the manufacturing engineering or operations track (i.e. plant rat) while if you want a desk job there’s lots of specializations there too. Better pair IE with a minor in something else (Comp Sci, operations management, and many other choices).

Cannot agree more to @turbo93 and @Chardo

IEs are in demand in almost every industry. After my Masters in IE, I have had the opportunity to work in Manufacturing, Consulting, Logistics.

You know the reason for it ? It wasn’t my gpa (btw - I almost had the lowest gpa amongst all my friends) , or the assignment grades I got.

It was because of the degree IE that I was able to market myself into almost any industry out there. In fact, I have explained here why the demand of IEs will always EXIST -

Hope this helps,

Any engineering major can get you a good job offer if you do well academically. Even though people may tell you that IOE is the major which engineering students resort to after deciding that they are unable to succeed in their original field of interest (which is true to some extent), there is still demand for them. People make fun of IOE for being the easiest engineering major, but it is still more challenging than the typical liberal arts major.
