Inexpensive Paring and hotel near H campus in Cambridge

Harding House is connected to Irving House on Irving Street, which is closer to parts of the campus.

rorosen: conversation? maybe. Croissants? No. The flop house, however, is within walking distance.

Marite,

Have you ever thought about opening up your own Bed and Breakfast in Cambridge? Just think how much money you could make just by housing CC parents!

I'm open for lunch or tea with CC parents, but breakfast? hmmm. No. I'm told there's a new International House of Pancakes in the Square, though. :)
You can flop on my living room couch next time you're in town, okay?

who gets control of the remote? do you leave one of those tiny chocolates on the pillow?

Not on my couch! No food allowed--well, popcorn. (

Beware, though, no easy parking in my neighborhood.

why popcorn? no one has ever managed to consume the stuff without littering
the yellow buds on lap and crevice,...how about icecream? if icecream is permitted, we might overlook the poor parking arrangements.

ice-cream in the kitchen, please. Popcorn goes with TV watching, alas.

Newparent, I'm so happy that you get to worry about parking in Cambridge!

Wait a minute, I thought we were going to your neighborhood because we COULD park!

It weren't me who said there was parking in my neighborhood, your honor.:(
My cleaning lady saw the ice and snow all around my neighborhood and decided to go home. No parking space, she said. :(

Well then we'll need to meet at IHOP in the Square - after I park!

newparent - If you have a child at Harvard, you can stay at the Harvard Club in Boston, three or four miles up Mass Ave. on the No. 1 bus, for $169. They have their own parking as well. Also, the Irving House is something of a combination between a large B&B and a nice small hotel, three blocks from Harvard Yard, though it's probably a 10-15 minute hike from the Harvard T station.

Irving House is a ten minutes hike unless you are really slow!

Just planning our trip this evening, so perfect thread for me. How close are MIT and H? Can we park at one place for the day and get to both or do we need to drive from one to the other?

You could actually walk to MIT from Harvard or vice-versa. But there are buses going down Mass Ave. There is also the T (two stops on the Red Line). The Kendall Square Station is a bit less convenient to MIT than the bus. If you stay at the Inn@MIT, you will be slightly closer to MIT but it will still be convenient for Harvard and close to the Central Square station, which is one stop away from Harvard Square.

JHS :

Yes, it is a nice problem to have. To be honest, I still sometime pinch myself as if I am dreaming. Despite having very few economic resources to support her inquisitive mind, my daughter had got a chance to attend a prep school and now an early admission to H is beyond our belief. Four years ago if you asked me all this, I would have said in your dreams bud.

Thank god, we are in America. We are indebted not because of daughter got these chances, but because American generosity had opened our reality to new dimension that includes volunteerism and serve other people.

I hope these opportunities come to other kids in other parts of the world and see what is very American values are.

I still want to thank Marite, onemoremom, Twinmom, northsatamom, you and many more parents to educate me and my family.

marite - Thanks for the quick answer. I am actually on another screen booking it right now using our Hilton Honors points. Great news that we can walk to both schools.

Sewbusy:

It's a long walk, especially in this weather. It was in the 50s today, but there were still snow, ice and puddles that made walking treacherous, and parking ever more impossible than usual. But I believe my S's friends used to go to MIT to play DDR, and they were closer to Harvard than MIT.

Newparent - We are all very happy for your daughter and your entire family!

Omigod, walking from MIT to Harvard. Don't do it. I had to do it once because the #1 bus broke down just north of MIT, and it was not fun. (Well, it was also October, and I was wearing non-sensible shoes. But still. :))

I would recommend parking at or walking to MIT and taking either the bus or the subway to Harvard -- there's a small parking lot on the north corner of Mass Ave and Vassar Street (just north of MIT's campus, and about 2 blocks south of the Hotel@MIT), and they only charge like $8 for the whole day. (And $0 after business hours and on weekends!)
