influence of essays/recs

How important are essays/recs in college admissions? If you've got outstanding grades, SAT scores, and extracurriculars, will a dull essay or letter of rec kill your chances at a top university?

I'm worried because for some reason I lack the ability to persuade people of things -- I can typically make people laugh, but not move them to tears. Plus I'm not sure how much my recommenders really wanted to write for me (I forgot to ask them if they were comfortable beforehand and such).

You shouldn't have to move them to tears, haha. I'm pretty sure I'm the same way :( .

I wouldn't be too worried. As long as you kinda participate, and know the teacher somewhat well, you should be good. The rec letter should confirm your grades/SAT scores/Extracurrics. You can talk with your teacher about the letter, too.
