Info. on any or all of: Brown, Hampshire, Yale, Vassar, Emerson, S. Law, Williams

For a theatre major, I'm looking at these schools.
Emerson, Hampshire, Brown, Yale, Vassar, Williams, Sarah Lawrence.

Any information anyone could give me on these schools would be great. I'm specifically concerned with general reputability of the B.A. Theatre program, the classroom environment, and the possibility of a double-major (in my case, in biology).

Thanks!

Yale’s Theater Studies major is more focused on learning theater as a whole: the history, theories, acting, directing, etc. Double-major is a definite possibility. From what I know, the program is reputable (the Yale brand helps a LOT), and I’ve heard sayings like, whoever graduates from Yale gets a job as soon as they step off the subway at NYC. Of course, it’s an exaggeration, but don’t underestimate the power of prestige. However, Yale’s more known for its fantastic theater programs of its graduate schools at the Masters level. There are tons of opportunities for you to get involved as an actor or a director on campus, as there are a lot of shows that are put on each year.

Hope that helps! I would also consider Northwestern if you’re looking for a strong BA program (Northwestern’s is commonly cited as #1 in the nation) with a great liberal arts education.

Thanks- I asked about these programs in particular because I know less about them. Northwestern’s already second on my list, and I would be thrilled to go there :)

All of the mentioned programs have strong theatre. I am not sure about the possibility of a double major with biology at Emerson, which is known for arts and communications. Emerson is also a school which has BA and BFA students. I am unsure about the opportunities for BAs. A former student of mine will be starting there in the BA theatre program this coming year, so I will ask her. Sarah Lawrence and Hampshire are similar in the sense that they both have “flexible” curriculum. Both have great theatre programs, SL is very close to NYC, and many of the faculty work in the city frequently. Hampshire is in the 5 college system, with student access to all of those campuses and opportunities. Williams, Yale, and Vassar all have professional theatre companies on campus in the summer or during the year. At Yale the affiliation is really between the graduate drama school and the professional theatre, but undergraduates would have the opportunity to be exposed to a fine regional theatre. The undergraduate DRAMAT also often hires professional directors to work with the students. At Vassar and Williams students, as well as students from other schools intern with the pro companies in the summer. You may also want to look at Conn. College, affiliated with O’Neill theatre institute. Brown’s graduate program I believe has an affiliation with Trinity Rep., I am not sure about the undergraduate program, but it is a strong program, regardless.
