Hello! Does anyone have any info or input on Mason Gross or Peabody’s dance programs? My daughter is interested in as much contemporary as possible and wondering if contemporary is a big part of these programs or not focused on much?? Thanks in advance for your help!!
My daughter is currently a freshman BFA at Mason Gross. Let me know if you/she has any questions. My daughter is home on break until the 20th.
@amom2girls Thanks so much for your response! Is your daughter liking the dance program? My daughter is wondering if the program is more focused around contemporary or more modern techniques? Also curious if there is performance and choreography opportunities for the dancers? Anything your daughter would like to add would be so appreciated! My daughter really likes hearing from the dancers in the different programs and she does not know anyone in the program. Thanks in advance!!
We have a friend with a D at Peabody. It is more contemporary, not so much classical/pointe. Regular performances (each semester), not sure how the student choreography will work as they only have freshmen so far. She really likes it there, though the location is a bit sketchy and the separation from main campus is annoying. Definitely a good opportunity because it’s still early days for the program and they have lots of resources (including merit scholarships apparently, no idea of the details).
@Twoin18 Thank you!!
@twoin18 Thanks for the feedback from you D’s friend. Do you know if ballet is offered every day at Peabody and how often pointe is offered? My daughter isn’t interested in a BFA, but is hoping to continue mostly daily ballet. Also if it’s available to non-majors.
Thanks!
@Darcy123 You can check out the JHU course catalog, it shows daily 80 min ballet and modern classes, but no separate pointe class. I don’t know if they do any pointe at all, from what I heard the performance didn’t involve pointe, but I’m not 100% certain of that.
The size of the classes (two classes of 15) and the fact it is every day and at a separate site suggests it is not designed for non-majors to participate, although while the program is small, there might be spots available.
Thanks for the info. I’ll have her follow up with the school. We’ve received some very vague assurances from the admission counselor, but really need to dig in further.
