Info on Scholarships and Living Communities

I have seen questions about scholarships and living communities posted by EA accepted students so I thought I would share what I know since my DD is a 4th year at GT and is part of the Grand Challenges community.

Merit Scholarships:

GT is not very generous with merit money or financial aid so do not expect a lot especially if you are an OOS. The main merit scholarships are as follows and financial need is not a component of the award.

  1. Stamps Scholarships- GT selects 300 students to be semi-finalists for the Stamps Scholarship program and those selected have already been notified via email. Right now local alumni are soliciting assistance for interviewing the Stamps semifinalists and my email says that interviews will begin the first week of March. Interviews are conducted locally and will either be face to face or via skype. Students are interviewed usually by a 3 person panel. Following these interviews the group gets cut down to 100 students who are deemed finalists. Those students have to fly out to GT for the final selection process in April which usually runs two days and consists of more interviews including group interviews. Following that round 40 students are selected as Stamps Scholars which basically means the student has received a full-ride plus other perks to GT. My DD's two roommates are Stamps Scholars and they really enjoy the program.

Last year one of my students made it to the finalist round but was not selected to be a Stamps Scholar. As a sort of consolation prize, my student was awarded a scholarship valued between $20-$25K a year for 4 years. This scholarship covered the out of state portion of her tuition. I don’t know if GT awards that scholarship to all finalists who are not selected for Stamps.

  1. Provost Scholarships. GT usually awards 40 Provost Scholarships, 20 scholarships are awarded during the EA round and another 20 usually during the RD round of acceptances. Notification is usually two weeks after the admission decisions is released and notification is via email. Most Provost Scholarships are awarded to URMs that are either OOS or international. I usually hear that the scholarship is for $20K per year.
  2. FIRST Robotics Scholarship-1 scholarship for $5K is awarded to an entering freshman who has participated in First Robotics. It requires a separate application that is due March 1.
  3. Merit Scholarships awarded by local GT Alumni Clubs and Affinity Network Groups.- Every year some of the Alumni Clubs and Affinity Groups for local communities award merit scholarships to entering freshman. The amount varies between $1 to $5K and the scholarship is not renewable. There is a separate application required and is due January 25, 2018. My DD received one from our local alumni club. They interviewed her via phone in March and made the award in April. The money was administered by GT's financial aid office and listed on a financial aid award letter.
  4. Miscellaneous Scholarships- This page lists additional merit scholarship opportunities dependent on a student's major etc.https://www.finaid.gatech.edu/scholarships Note that some may require a separate application and a few may require financial need.

I will continue in another post since there is a character limitation.

Part Two of my post:

  1. Merit Scholarships after you are a student at Georgia Tech-

One thing my DD and I pleasantly learned is that there are additional merit scholarships offered by GT once you are a student. It is a little tricky finding out about them so you really need to do your own independent research. My listing is not exhaustive so take the time to ask other students in your major and do the research. One place where my DD has located more information about merit scholarships is the bi-weekly newsletter sent to ME majors by the ME Department. Be sure to check with your dept. This newsletter has brought additional GT Merit money to my DD’s attention as well as other private scholarships. Here is a sample of just some additional scholarships offered once you are a student at GT.

a. Women in Engineering Scholarship. Female engineering students who have at least a 3.0 gpa from GT classes will be invited to apply for a WIE scholarship valued at between $1k to $3K during January. Of the current 1800 engineering students who qualify for applying, about 180 scholarships are awarded at the annual banquet in April. What is nice about this scholarship is that it is awarded for the current year so you can save the scholarship and use it for the following year. Here is a link to more info: http://wie.gatech.edu/current-students/banquet/scholarships-awards Although it says financial need is a component, my DD has received one each year and we do not qualify for aid.

b. Scholarships sponsored by corporations that are used as recruiting tools. Companies will work with GT to sponsor scholarships which are basically used as recruitment tools by the company in attracting students to their companies. Check with your dept for these scholarships and the applications.
Here are just a few examples:

Ford Blue Oval Scholarships- As part of the Blue Oval Program, Ford Motor Company is offering four, $2,000 scholarships to qualifying Georgia Tech students in ME and ECE. The criteria for the scholarship includes: Current sophomore or junior class standing, a minimum GPA of 3.0, and an interest in the automotive industry. All applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and able to work in the United States. Application forms can be obtained from the ME Dept. and are due in April.

Phillips66 Shield Scholar Program - The link for more info is https://p66shieldscholar.jobs/georgia-tech/ This scholarship awards $3500 to rising juniors and seniors and it is renewable. A student must have a 3.25 and a wide variety of majors are eligible. Applications are due in March.

Imery’s North American Scholarship Program- Students are awarded $5K, a paid internship and an assigned mentor. Applications are due Mid-May and you have to have a 3.5 gpa. Wide variety of majors eligible. Applications available from your dept.

Semmes Scholarship-Awarded to rising junior or senior for $17K Application due in Sept. http://anak.gtorg.gatech.edu/semmes.html

Air Products Scholarship- A scholarship for $1500 awarded to juniors or seniors with a 3.2 gpa

BP Scholarship- $2500 awarded to a rising sophomore with a 3.5 gpa. Applications are due in Feb. Selected by the ME Dept.

Juniper Networks Scholarship- $10K award to a female soph or junior majoring in CS/CE/EE. https://www.iie.org/Programs/WeTech/STEM-Scholarships-for-Women/Juniper-Networks-Scholarship-and-Internship/United-States

c. Department Scholarships- Many GT Departments offer additional merit scholarships for students in their respective majors. For ME students, the application becomes available during the summer and is due in July. The ME department has about 30 scholarships available for the academic year, ranging from $500-$5,000 each. Some are merit based, but most are need based. The scholarships are given by donors who place specific restrictions on each scholarship. ME will match students up with any scholarships that they are eligible for. These scholarships will be awarded in September for both fall and spring semesters. Student must have a 3.5 gpa. and sophomores through seniors are eligible. Material Science offers a lot of scholarships also. http://www.mse.gatech.edu/undergraduate-program/scholarships

d. Pura Research Awards- these scholarships enable undergrad students to do research by awarding them salary or travel funds. http://undergradresearch.gatech.edu/content/presidents-undergraduate-research-awards

e. Study Abroad Scholarships.- This is one scholarship my DD failed to apply for, but plenty of her friends have received it. As freshmen I encourage you to study abroad after your freshman year especially if you are OOS. GT only charges you in-state tuition so you can save a lot of money. Study abroad programs tend to fill up early especially the GT Oxford and GT Lorraine programs so apply in September when enrollment opens. Here is the link to the scholarships- https://oie.gatech.edu/ea/study-abroad-scholarships

f. Campus Life Scholarship- Criteria and deadlines can be found at this link. http://campusservices.gatech.edu/scholarships

g. Dean Scholarships through the Allen College of Liberal Arts. Eligible rising freshman for $2K. Application due in March. https://www.iac.gatech.edu/Students/undergraduate/financial-aid-scholarships/deans-scholarships

I will do part three tomorrow but the above scholarships give you an idea of some additional merit scholarship at GT.

Thanks, I’ve been looking for this information and this was very helpful. I’d love to hear what you think of Grand Challenges too.

@itsv Thanks a lot for the information!

My DD is a Stamps President’s Scholar. Just wanted to clarify the timeline as the dates are on our calendar as current Scholars help out. Semi-finalist interviews are actually in February (the 10th) and finalist interviews are in mid-March. Notifications are later in March.

Thanks for posting, very timely advices!

For the “Alumni and Affinity scholarships”, when we put in our zip code, it says “no alumni organization,” and we are not associated with the companies in the affinity groups. Does that mean this one is out of the reach?

The Provost’s description looks like it’s for all OOS candidates. If it’s earmarked for URMs, it’s disappointing.
