Informal band opportunities at Michigan?

Hi All,

My son will be attending Michigan in the fall as a freshman. Although he played in the band all 4 years of high school, he has no interest in being a music major/minor or being in the marching band. However, he would enjoy continuing with his music on a much more informal level, such as participating in a low key brass ensemble. He does not want the stress of having to practice every night or the pressure to continue with weekly lessons - just a fun, easy way to continue with music.

Since music was not any part of the college decision making and his major is not related to music, we don’t know anything about the opportunities for students in music. Are there informal music groups on campus?

Thanks!

There are several campus bands and campus Orchestras that are open to non-music students.

The University and Campus Band section on this page also has info about who to contact for ensembles:

For Orchestras, see the last two sections on this page: https://smtd.umich.edu/current_students/perf_opps/orchestras.htm

Hope one of these opportunities works for your son. Michigan has a great music community.

Thank you!!

If you want something even more informal than some of the student orgs, a lot of students in the dorms often have spontaneous (or planned by the hall or a RA) jam sessions and the like. Definitely have him check that out.
