Inquiries about Scholarships

DISCLAIMER: IF YOU DON’T WANT TO READ A DRAGGED OUT PARAGRAPH, SKIP UNTIL YOU SEE ASTRIDS*
Hi everyone! I’m a kid that has been stressing out about college for the longest. I really want to get a full ride to either Duke or UNC and in 7th grade I’ve already taken half of a high school class which I got a 90 in (I was slacking last year). Anyways I know, I know I have a long time until I have to start worrying about this stuff but I don’t want to be stuck in summer of junior year not knowing what I’m going to do! I know my family won’t be able to pay for UNC or Duke if I don’t get a full ride. I haven’t started high school yet and I really want to be valedictorian, I’m a muslim girl so I think it would be really cool to show people that we aren’t oppressed and we don’t grow up to be stay at home moms and that we are just as worthy and we have just as much intelligence if we have drive. I’ve started studying for the SAT’s and ACT’s. I want to be part of my school’s MSA club, volunteer at the hospital my sister works at, tutor and be part of student council whilst having stellar grades. My drive is to help my parents when I grow up and I want to try to pay them back for all they’ve done for me. Sorry this is long but basically I have my heart set out for a full ride at either Duke or UNC. (If I get a full ride to both I’ll choose Duke) anyways, my question and reason for dragging this out how should I start and continue through with high school next year and what should I do in the 4 year of highschool that will earn me a Robertson Scholarship (Duke+UNC), Morehead-Cain Scholarship (UNC), A.B Duke Scholarship (I’d get to travel to Oxford Uni for a summer!), Reginaldo Howard Memorial Duke Scholarship, or Benjamin N. Duke Scholarship and best case scenario, Gates Millennium Scholarship.

  • What I'm trying to say is, how do I enter and undergo highschool in a way that I'm secured a full ride so that I can go to Duke or UNC. What kind of grades, sat and act scores, community + service and leadership activities do I need to do for a full ride to Duke or UNC.

Duke barely offers merit scholarships, and the ones they do require pretty much perfect stats. I know one person on a full ride there, and she literally scored a 2400 on the SAT in one sitting (in addition to international awards, immense community service, etc etc etc).

So I wouldn’t count on Duke. UNC is probably more realistic.

Thank you CourtneyThurston, when I researched I saw Duke’s acceptance rate is about 3X less than UNC’s, let alone getting a full ride based on merit.

FYI…the word is asterisks.

Are you a high school freshman? If so, just concentrate on doing the best you can in school.

^^Not even - 7th grade.

Please just enjoy being a kid/young adult. It is way too early to be worrying about this. Explore your interest. Have some fun. Keep your grades up.

I try but I’m not like other kids and my sister had a full ride oppurtunity to UNC and took it, and when she failed all her classes my parents leave me with the whole “you’re the last child don’t let us down!” thing.
