Inside Medicine. What Are You Seeing? [COVID-19 medical news]

If they try to call it American flu, calling it Chinese flu is childish but not exactly wrong. Anyway, I wouldn’t put Chinese vaccine in my body if I get paid. Remember the Chinese drywall that was used in new construction that corroded wirings and made people sick a few years ago? That wasn’t even inside of your body.

I’m sure you (and/or your kids) had Chinese vaccines (and many other medications) put into your body already. Do you realize that a huge majority of our meds are produced in China?

I would not accept a Chinese vaccine - until several years of safety data was available. On a ferry from HK to Macau one passes numerous, multi-lingual warning signs. There is a strict limit on the amount of baby formula one can transport from HK to Macau. Why - because the Chinese stuff had melamine in it!

I was about to say the same thing. I was astounded to read the statement. I guess most folks don’t know where many of our meds are produced?

The good thing is Chinese medicine is as advanced as ours. Seemingly moreso in sections, esp as it relates to Covid.

One can get unscrupulous companies and snake oil salesfolks anywhere in the world, including the US.

^ Speaking of China & supply chains, does anyone know if the Feds are taking steps to move/secure supply chains here in US for swabs, reagents, generic drugs, etc?

So I heard. Producing according to strict guidelines, after thorough study is done is different from creating from scratch. Chinese vaccine would be the latter. Germans were complaining about Chinese ventilators that they could kill patients. Vaccine is more sensitive.

A relative who was a pharmaceutical industry chemist for many years told me to always ask where a medicine was made when ordering a prescription med, and avoid those made in China or India if at all possible (many drugs are produced in several different countries). It’s not that they’re likely to kill you, but the quality is just not the same.

While it is true that ingredients for pharmaceuticals are made in China (and India), it is not exactly correct to say that “our vaccines are made in China.” Biologics manufacturing is different.

As for the Covid vaccines, one vaccine maker, Pfizer, is ramping up their vaccine plants in the US and Belgium.

@Iglooo - When I clicked through from the Yahoo article, it led me to an article in the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal, but even in that one I can’t find the title to the original paper in Cell. Have you been able to find it?

@Igloo - I did find it with scholar.google.com  I must admit that I’m a bit sad that the original paper doesn’t use the word “tentacle”.

I found the article again. Here it is again. You have to scroll further down after Milwaukee link. This is a little easier to read. It sounds like a breakthrough.

The reliability of the particular antibody test may be one question on this study. But it’s still interesting.

Great news:

This is really great news! Since there is an outbreak in Houston, hopefully they are using the plasma now on the ICU patients.

Hello all! Just popping in to give the latest from my wife’s primary care clinic.

With the WA state mandatory mask order, people are asking for a “medical exemption” to avoid wearing a mask. She is refusing, same as she did with people asking for hydrochloroquine prescriptions. She worked Critical Care and ICU before changing to primary care and never once encountered someone that was incapable of wearing a paper surgical mask. Vanity and politics are not actual medical conditions.

The reopening rules that some places are adopting are going to put a strain on testing. Daycares are requiring negative tests from the whole family before allowing kids back in. She is hearing that colleges will require tests before the semester. Companies are asking for testing for all employees. We will see how this plays out.

She is seeing a full panel of patients and has been since end of April. “Anxiety, anxiety, and anxiety” is how she put it. It has taken quite a mental toll on people and many are cracking.

Personally, we have pretty much written off the summer and fall already, hoping to ride it out until we get a vaccine. We are hoping that our youngest has at least a reasonable senior year of college and that COVID does not blow up too badly during th Sept/Oct flu season.

Take care and stay healthy.

Love to hear some medical/science community thoughts on face shields. One article I read surprisingly seem to say they were as good as cloth masks? This was commenting on face shields alone, not in combo with masks. Seems if this the case that would be great for teachers and maybe better for students. Read an article with someone who review wearing on and liked it better than expected except for running, when it was a fail. But could drink from a straw with it on so maybe would be worn more.

One school around here is showing teachers wearing shield that goes from neck up. Again, in theory makes sense for students to see teacher’s face ( I have some young hard of hearing relatives so it’s always in the back of my mind.

Again, want to be sure I’m hearing from right sources.

Thank you for the update @Magnetron, and many thanks to your wife for being there for her patients. Stay safe!

I dont know if this has been posted before about using the active ingredient in pepcid AC (which is famotidine) having a better outcome when hospitalized than placebo.https://www.cuimc.columbia.edu/news/heartburn-drug-may-have-potential-against-covid-19
