Insight on paying College needed

Hey guys. i'll be applying to colleges this year. i am a US national but have been living in Pakistan for a decade or so. I wanted to ask will my admission be treated as an International Immigrant or as an US national. Also, will this help in getting me good scholarship in either private universities or public universities. I have a good college App. Perfect GPA, handful of Extra-Curricular and a good SAT score. please help

What do you mean by “US national”? Are you US citizen?

If you are a U.S. Citizen, you will apply to college, and for financial aid as a U.S. Citizen.

Sounds like you are either a US citizen or green card holder. If so, then you might be able to get good aid. Many schools dont give good aid, so it may depend on where you get accepted.

You will be OOS for all publics so those schools will be more expensive and wont likely give you need based aid. Some may give you merit scholarships.

What are your stats?

What schools interest you?

what is your major?

Sorry for not making my self clear as im not good with the terminologies. I was born in Pennsylvania. lived the next 6 years in New York. Then my family moved to Pakistan and i have been there ever since. i have my social security number and my Blue Passport. Please provide further information. Thank you so much for helping

I am looking forward to major in Computer Sciences. In my case, i’ll gladly go to any university which gives me the max financial aid.

ok…you are a citizen.

FA will be based on your parents income and assets. And, most schools do not meet need. And, most do not include the costs for international travel.

You will not be considered instate for any public schools.

What are your test scores (include breakdown).

How much can your family pay?

i have completed the GCE O-levels. Now i am doing the GCE A-levels. Here in Pak, they do not offer American High School. But my record is good. I had 8 subjects in O-levels in which i got 5A* and 3A. Now in my A-levels i have chosen Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Computer Sciences. In the Mid-terms i got 3A* and 1A. and now in my A1-Finals i got 2A* and 2A. (the final of my A-1 is like the 12th year of education). My Expected grades will be all A’s. i play soccer (extra-curricular). i have helped my school manage various events. (Competitions etc. ) i am very good at Computers. And also i am in the Student Council. (Prefect, 10 students chosen from a group of 400). I am giving my SAT in Oct. i am aiming for 2000+ and i think i’ll get that

my family cannot pay for my college expense. we are not that well off. my father only supports the family and barely can meet the expanses. you can say $9000 annually.

You will need to look at the schools in the pinned threads at the top of this forum. Assured Merit Aid and Full Tuition scholarships. $9K will basically take care of room and board.

If your father can barely pay his family bills, where will over $700 a month come from to fund your college costs?

thumper makes an excellent point. Are you “wishing” they can pay that much? or have they committed to paying that much? If you really dont know how much they will pay, ask them.

i did not get your point :/

his TOTAL income is $9000 annually here in Pak. :|

Oh. I asked the question: How much can your family pay…and then you made a comment that sounded like he could pay $9k.

Well, I can tell you this…unless you get into a super generous school (extremely hard to do), then you wont likely find any schools here affordable. It doesnt sound like your family can pay for int’l travel costs and health insurance costs…which would be at least $4k per year.

What are your stats? What is your SAT breakdown?

What schools are you looking at?

edited to add…

You currently have a 1150 M+CR. The chances that you will increase that to a 1450+ is very unlikely.

Berea and work colleges like that? Not sure they have CS, though.
Personally, I think it would be wiser to self-study programming online, code, and do project work like that. After you’ve managed to save a bit of money and have some experience, you can try to find a job in the States. Then work your way through college at something like Harvard Extension School or another night school.

But take a look here: http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/</a></p>

Getting your test score up to qualify for a full-ride at some of these schools seems acheivable. Then you can take out direct loans and work to earn money to cover the rest. The rest may include housing and food over the summer. Going back to Pakistan over the summer may not make sense, as living costs over a summer may actually be less than travel costs to/from Pakistan.

You may qualify for the Pell Grant as well, though what can schools award? Up to tuition+room+board or COA?

I was wondering, If i get admitted into a good university, wont they automatically grant me financial aid after i fill out the FAFSA. (Need-based Scholarship)

FAFSA is for federal aid…and it isnt much…a Pell grant 5700 and a 5500 loan. That wont pay for college.

You dont seem to understand. Most univs do not have enough money to fund low income students. They will gap you.

That is why most low income students and middle income domestic students can’t afford to go to the schools that they would like to attend. They fill out FAFSA, get a low EFC, but so what? Schools arent required to do anything with that except see if you qualify for any of the fed aid (which isnt much). The fed govt cant require colleges to give you their own money (which most schools dont have anyway).

If you can get your scores up high enough to get a merit scholarship covering tuition, room, board, books, fees (and this isnt easy to get), then you would get the Pell grant and student loan to cover personal expenses and insurance. But you will have to come up with your travel costs yourself since you wont get aid til school starts.

Right now, your test scores aren’t nearly high enough to get into the schools that “meet need.” (and again, many of those wont cover intl travel or insurance)

Even if you raised your scores by a few hundred points, your chances to get into a full need school is still low since sooooo many apply to those schools. These schools require CSS Profile.

What schools are you interested in?

At this time. NYUAD. You can pretty much understand my position
