I wondered what yogurt starter was…
I made carnival last night. It was out of this world. Though the family still makes fun of my infomercial enthusiasm it has been fabulous so far, great food and not heating up the kitchen.
Awesome, thanks Gertrude! So Fage does have live cultures as they claim. I have a few cups of their plain yogurt in the fridge. Now need to get milk from Costco!
What is “carnival”???
Pulled my pot out again after a little hiatus. Just finished making stuffed green peppers - I was nervous about if the time recommended - 15 minutes on manual - would be enough to cook the rice. It was! Very delicious and easy. So nice not to heat the kitchen up!
I want to order a steamer basket - something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Vegetable-Steamer-Basket-Silicone-Feet/dp/B01BZ76SDE/ref=sr_1_2?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1469905835&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=steamer+basket&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011&psc=1
Does anyone have one they want to recommend or one to not recommend? I’d like to order from Amazon.
Made a batch of hard-boiled eggs in the VIP this morning. Steam button, 8 minutes, 5 min NPR. Turned out perfect! Not as fast as the MW gizmo, but fits more eggs per batch!
I’ve got corn on the cob going right now - 2 minutes on “steam” - full report soon!
Regarding the yogurt straining - the official gizmo made a slightly creamier yogurt, but the difference was minor. It also lets some of the yogurt into the whey, whereas the coffee filter method yields a perfectly clear whey -not sure if that matters or not. So I guess if I didn’t already own it, I probably wouldn’t spend $20 on it - a cheap colander & some industrial size coffee filters would work almost as well & probably be hardier. The filter on the strainer is pretty fragile & not dishwasher safe.
Made another pot of ribs today! Love the cooking on the deck thing.
Abasket, I do not have any steamer basket recommendations for you, but I have seen the one you linked mentioned here. I think it should be fine for small amounts of veggies.
Well, I bought it last night so will let you know how the size works out - guess I should have taken the time to measure!
Corn on the cob came out great! Ended up steaming for 3 minutes, quick release.
We are trying kalua pork in the IP today. Also ordered little silicon cups for making poached eggs after seeing a Facebook post on the IP community.
Can you please post a link to the cups you ordered, @swimcatsmom ?
Bunsenburner- what kind of ribs are you using?
I feel like I’m failing The IP class. I’ve made red potatoes and a thigh recipe.
I buy pork ribs in a vacuum-sealed pack at Costco. I think there are about 7.5 lbs of ribs in the pack, about $30 a pack.
@BunsenBurner Here you go. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GNUJVOQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have never attempted Poached eggs. I only ever have them when we visit our son in SC because there is a local cafe that does wonderful eggs Benedict - I always try to go at least a couple of times. Thought I’d give them a go myself - though hollandaise sauce looks a tad intimidating!
Thanks, @swimcatsmom ! I love eggs benedict, but making the sauce is a pain, so I cheat and use those little packets of Knorr’s or McCormick’s. I know - sacrilege!!!
Didn’t know they made an instant pack - I’ll give them a try! I’m no purist or expert and am perfectly willing to cheat! I love the ones at the Cafe where my son lives (they do all sorts of variations - salmon is one I like). I may have tp swing by the supermarket on the way home and see if they carry the mix. (if not, Amazon here I come)
LOL’ing because I saw that post on the IP FB page with the poached eggs and wondered , “where can I get those?!” - please let us know how you like them! Poached eggs are my favorite!
These are the cups I bought after a few experiments, they don’t seem to tip as easy and still need a light lubricant
I’m hosting an annual family euchre (card) party on Sunday with an Olympics theme. So I’m looking to feature “international” food items. Looking for a tried and true “something” to cook in my IP that day. I was thinking maybe some type of saucy Asian chicken? (honey, garlic, sesame, ginger - any of these) Any ideas? Doesn’t have to be Asian!
If not chicken, I’m open to other EASY ideas that won’t require lots of finishing by other methods (grilling and such) because this will just be one of several dishes I will prepare.
I thought about this one…not sure how much of my crowd would eat it though (some of family is adventurous, some are PICKY): http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-slow-cooker-chicken-tikka-masala-recipes-from-the-kitchn-211284
