From what I have read about foreign Med schools and the ability to practice in the US is that Canada and US medical educations are fairly similar.

How would a Canadian educated med grad be licensed in the US? The same international test that is used for all other foreign schools? Is it the same process?

How would a US educated med grad be licensed to practice in Canada? Is there some kind of test similar to the one used by the US?

I ask this because I have family in both the US and Canada and still have not figured out which country I want to do my Undergraduate or Post-Grad work and eventually do my residency.

Any information is helpful. Thanks.

not sure about the US -> Canada route, but to be able to practice in the US, everyone takes the same series of tests called the USMLE's Steps 1-3

Step 1 is a clinical knowledge test covering basic sciences that in the US are taught during the first two years. This is done by US students before their clinical rotations begin.

Step 2 has a clinical knowledge component much like step 1 but also a clinical skills component in which you must perform several office visits with standardized patients, make the diagnosis, and write the clinical note (SOAP format I believe). Most US students do this during their 4th year, usually 1st semester.

step 3 is done during residency.
