Does anyone know what kind of relationship the students at carleton have with those at St. Olaf's? Is there much there besides the rivalry? Do they see each other much? Does anyone at Carleton have friends there or is that unusual?

bump bump bump

I've heard that there is some degree of interaction...used to be that Oliphants went to Carleton to get alcohol. My friend at Carleton has friends at St. Olaf, but I don't know if that's typical.

I definitely forget St. Olaf exists unless I go into town and see tall, blond, Norwegian college kids. People can take courses at both schools by special arrangements, but hardly anybody does. That said, a lot of people at Carleton know a couple people at St. Olaf, either because they went to high school with them, met them at a party, or whatnot. Oles do come to Carleton on the weekends because Olaf is a dry campus (meaning not even students over 21 can have alcohol there), and you can always spot an Olaf kid at a party here because s/he is All-American looking and very, very drunk. There are also Carl/Ole relationships, though not that many, but the Love Bus makes it a little easier (the shuttle between the campuses). I would say the rivalry isn't a big deal for the most part and that people don't think about it. Sometimes there are events happening at Olaf that a lot of Carls go to (Ben Folds concert last fall, some talks and colloquia, etc), but other than that, Olaf doesn't play a role in the student life here.

Oh, and then there's all the controversy over Spring Concert, which used to be jointly funded with Olaf paying the larger part of it, but Olaf pulled out this year due to disagreements over Carleton's alcohol policy. If you want to find out about that you can read the minutes on the Carleton Student Association (CSA) website, I guess.

use a toothbrush has described my D's observations accurately.

That's interesting because my best friend is going to St. Olaf's.

Just a quick note about the interaction. The concert issue was actually a couple of years ago. My daughter is interested in St. Olaf so I decided to do some background research. In the last couple of years, evidently there have been some significant alcohol issues (e.g., alcohol poisonings) at Carleton and the most recent discussion includes a strong possibility that the future spring concert may be alcohol-free at Carleton and may once again open the possibility of a joint function with St. Olaf.

Have heard from a couple of recent St. Olaf graduates and a couple of Carleton kids that there is some (but not extensive) interaction between the campuses.
