Hi, I am a senior in high school with a 3.5 gpa on a 4.0 scale. I live in the state of Texas and want to attend college for petroleum engineering (my father is pushing historically black colleges, but most only have mechanical or chemical). I don't have the grades for Texas A&M, so I'm considering Louisiana Lafayette and university of Houston.

Which is a better school for what I want to study?

Also I want to go into the upstream field. My dream is to be able to work and live in the Middle East, how do salaries in the Middle East compare with salaries in the u.s?

I’d say Houston is better, especially if you are going to get in-state tuition. I had an opportunity to hear Dr. Holley (dean of the UH Petroleum dept.) speak and he comes off as extremely approachable and intelligent, I was very impressed. Houston also has a wealth of internship and co-op opportunities which are much more important than where you went to school.

I’m not sure about the salary comparison between domestic and the middle east. I will say that I have never heard of someone graduating and then heading to the middle east (unless they are from there). My guess is it would be ~20% higher.
